Sweet Tooth

Sweet Tooth is a Netflix Original series based on a comic book of the same name. The first season aired in 2021 and I just got done watching season 2 which aired in 2023. There will be a third and final season, but there is no scheduled released date, but I would assume it will be 2025 or late 2024 at the earliest.

The Movie Review

I will admit that I had never read the comic book, but the trailer made Sweet Tooth look like a fun and whimsical fantasy type of show. Well, I would say that Sweet Tooth is kind of a hybrid between sci-fi and fantasy rather than just fantasy like I thought it was going to be.

The setting of the show is a world that has been decimated by a disease that is referred to as The Sick. The Sick resulted in the majority of the humans in the world being wiped out. It is a horrible disease and while there are some trying to rebuild the world, as you would expect, this situation has brought out the worst in many people.

However, that is not the only change the world would undergo. Soon, “hybrids” started to be born, hybrids are half human and half animal and people are not sure if they are a result of The Sick or if they are the cause of it! There are many humans that hate these hybrids and hunt them for sport or out of what they perceive as revenge.

Our main character is a 10-year-old hybrid called, Gus who is half human, half deer and he lives with his dad who he calls Pubba. Pubba dies and Gus finds a box that has a picture of a woman who he thinks is his mother. The picture has something written on it and that is Colorado.

Gus decides to make the journey to try and find his mother. Along the way, Gus is hunted by some sadistic humans and saved by a man called Tommy that Gus calls Big Man. Gus ends up following Tommy and ends up getting him to agree to help Gus make his way to Colorado.

I love the relationship that builds between our two leads and I think the overall story of The Sick and the way it mutates and becomes even worse, kicks the stakes up several notches. Add to this a group of half-breeds rising up and Gus and his friends being captured by the evil General Abbot and season 2 was even more epic than the first. Be sure not to read too much about the show before watching it as there are a lot of surprises in the story.

Sweet Tooth ended up being a show that I really did like. I actually bought the first volume of the comic book, but I have not read it yet. This is a fun and engaging sci-fi/fantasy show with some very likable characters that you will really grow to love. I highly recommend that you check out Sweet Tooth if you are looking for an addictive and entertaining new series to watch.
