The Adam Project

The Adam Project is a Netflix original movie that I had a lot of fun with. It is one of many Netflix/Ryan Reynolds collaborations and this one is a sci-fi/time travel movie. It does have a bit of a mixed reception, but I think that it is better than most people give it credit for. I will say that your fondness for Ryan Reynolds is probably going to have a major effect on how much you like this movie!

The Movie Review

Ryan Reynolds plays a man called, Adam Reed who lives in 2050 and things are not exactly great there. Adam is a badass pilot and he has come back in time to try and save his wife, Laura who is played by Zoe Saldana. Of course, as is the case with anything to do with time travel, things do not go smoothly for Adam.

To start with, what he is doing is against the rules. In 2050 things are ruled by a woman called Maya Sorian (Kathleen Keener) and she has some interesting ties to Adam’s father who is played by Mark Ruffalo. Rounding up the main cast are Walker Scobell as young Adam and Jennifer Garner as his mother, Ellie.

Young Adam in 2022 is trying to deal with the passing of his father which happened a year earlier. He is distant, gets into trouble at school, and is not very nice to his mother who is also grieving. Future Adam’s quest to save his wife goes wrong and he ends up in 2022 where he meets his younger self.

Seeing the two Adams interact with each other is hilarious and I have to give a ton of credit to young Walker Scobell as you really would believe that he was a young Ryan Reynolds. The two of them decide to head back even further to 2018 to talk to their father who is the one responsible for time travel…. As I said, time travel never goes smoothly.

We have Maya trying to stop the two Adams by any means necessary and it makes for a pretty wild and fun action movie. However, this is also a movie with a lot of heart too. Seeing the two Adams bond over the memories of their father and then getting the chance to spend time with him was very well done and very heartfelt.

I think that the Adam Project is a very well-made movie. It has some exciting action scenes, but it is not too over the top or just tries to get by with its special effects. It is more focused on telling a good story. I have seen many time travel movies that are a confusing mess, but this one here manages to tell its story without making you go cross-eyed trying to figure it all out.

The Adam Project is one of the best Netflix Original movies to be released in 2022. If you like Ryan Reynolds’s usual schtick, you will enjoy this, but if you do not like him, chances are this movie is not for you. I had fun with it and I could easily see myself watching this again at some point.
