The Break-Up is a 2006 romantic comedy that is one of the better ones from this time period. The funny thing about this is that the movie is not exactly held in the highest regard, but I have always really enjoyed this. I watched it for the first time in a few years recently and still think that it is an entertaining time.

The Movie Review
I am a big Vince Vaughn fan and I think that this is one of his more underrated roles. It also stars Jennifer Aniston along with an awesome supporting cast. The movie is about a couple, Gary and Brooke who fall in love and move into a very desirable condo together. Gary works as a tour guide with his brothers and Brooke is in charge of an art gallery in the city.
Character Dynamics
Brooke and Gary are two very different people. As time goes on, their relationship gets more and more strained. Gary feels like he has no independence and Booke is trying to control him Brooke thinks that Gary is selfish and does not appreciate her. It all comes to a head after a dinner party and they decide that they are going to break up.
Plot Development
The thing is, they have this dream condo and they decide that the best thing they can do is sell it, but they are stuck living together for a few weeks. They purposely try and get on each other’s nerves, Gary making a mess and Brooke letting her brother and his musical friends use the place to rehearse. They are both very petty and vindictive, but it is a lot of fun to watch.
Character Growth
To be honest, I do feel like Gary is the one who is mostly in the wrong here and the movie does a good job of letting us see him grow and become a better person. On the flip side of this, we have Brooke learning to be less highly strung and to try and do things that she actually enjoys. We have a lot of humor sprinkled in, Gary and his brothers operating their touring business is something I thought was a lot of fun.
Conclusion
Now, you may think that The Break-Up is as predictable as every other romantic comedy out there, and by the end of it, these two will realize that they love each other and get back together. Well, I do not want to spoil it for you, but this is not as predictable as you would think and I do think that the ending does make you smile, but it is not just the typical super happy ending you would expect from a romantic comedy.
This is one of those movies that I am not sure why it does not click with people as much as I think it should. It has a fantastic cast, it has a relatable story and it has some legit funny and heartfelt moments. It has most of what you would want from a romantic comedy! Although, I guess I could see why if you are not a Vince Vaughn fan, it may not be for you as he is a very typical “Vince Vaughn” in this movie.
