I was in high school when The Crow came out in 1994 so I was the perfect age for it. The original movie is an absolute classic and it is a movie I still love to this day. Granted the sequels are not that great and there is also that god awful video game, but 1994’s The Crow is amazing. To be honest, I was not fully against a reboot and was interested to see what they would do.

The Crow (2024) Review: First Impressions
There were many who were dead against it and were sure they would screw it up. I kind of just brushed all that stuff off, I mean if they remake it and it sucks, that does not tarnish the original in any way. However, there are some people who feel that remakes can alter their enjoyment of the original. I saw The Crow after all the negative reviews started coming out so my expectations were rock bottom.
Visuals and Cinematography
, this is not a great movie and it sure as hell is not even in the same league as the original 1994, The Crow, but to be fair it was not actually as horrible as I thought that it would be. The best thing I can say is that the movie looks great, granted, Eric looks just like a junkie which is what he really is in this movie, but the makeup work is impressive. The movie is shot well and there is some great scenery which has a modern gothic kind of vibe.
Plot Breakdown: Where It All Falls Apart
Now the story, the story is where this kind of goes to hell….. literally. Zadie is a musician who has some “issues” and she ends up with evidence that is bad news for a big crime boss called Vincent Roeg. This crime boss also made a deal with the devil where he is tasked with sending innocent souls to hell in order for eternal life. You know something? As a premise, I freaking love this idea, it is such a cool idea for a story!
A New Eric: The Character Shift
Now, we also have Eric and he is nothing like the Eric Draven we know and love from the original Crow! He is in rehab and finds out what happened to Zadie, he ends up killed but is brought back with supernatural powers to try and kill this big mob boss guy to save his and Zadie’s souls.
Final Thoughts on The Crow (2024)
To be fair, if this movie was not called The Crow, I would probably have enjoyed it a great deal more than I did. The premise is pretty awesome, to be honest with you and we have some great actors bringing it to life in the form of Bill Skarsgård and Danny Huston. The thing is the premise may be great, but the execution is really lacking. The dialogue here is so cringy that you have to wonder how no one yelled “CUT” when they were filming this to ask if this is really what should be said.
It is like the movie is trying way too hard to be edgy and cool. Some may look at the original, The Crow, and say it is edgy or “emo” but this was not forced and at the time it was just cool. If anything, people tried to emulate Eric and be cool and dress like he did! This movie feels like it is trying way too hard to be cool.
Verdict for Fans of The Original
I can fully see why some fans of the original Crow hate this movie. I consider myself a huge fan of the original, but I would not say I hated this movie. Granted, I did not love it, but I think that they had some good ideas and they were let down by trying way too hard to be cool and edgy. I think had they called this something else, it probably would have fared a bit better, but at the end of the day, some of the dialogue in this movie is so cringy, that it will make you laugh.
