I loved The Equalizer when it was released back in 2014 and was kind of shocked, but very happy that it got a sequel in 2018 and I was even more shocked when it was revealed this was going to be a trilogy. By all accounts, this is the final Equalizer movie but never say never in Hollywood, especially seeing as this is being very well received and has already made a decent amount at the box office.

The Movie Review
The start of The Equalizer 3 is epic and high-octane stuff. Our hero, Robert McCall is on a job in Italy where he is trying to get back a bunch of money that was stolen in a cyber heist. He gets the job done, but he is brutally wounded, wounded so badly that he thinks about ending it all!
Discovering Altamonte
However, his life is saved by a kind old Italian doctor who takes him to the small town of Altamonte. Robert heals up here and develops a real love for the town and the people who call the place home. I have to say this part of the movie is incredibly well done, but there is a bit of a catch.
The Beautiful Town
We get to see Robert fall in love with this town firsthand and as a result, we fall in love with it too. It looks beautiful, the food looks amazing and the people are just so nice. We get a real connection with this place and as Robert starts to think that he can be happy here and live a good life, the mafia, and the hold they have over the place starts to rear its ugly head.
Slow Burn and Action
I will say that The Equalizer 3 is a very slow burn. Yes, it starts off at 100mph, but after that, the movie slams on the break and takes a much slower pace for like an hour. Now, to be fair, I think the slow burn here is good and it does do a great job of making us feels as connected to this place as Robert does, but I could certainly see why some people may start to get a bit antsy without Robert kicking some butt. Do not get me wrong, Rober does do some major damage, but the movie makes you wait for it after that opening scene.
Denzel’s Performance
I liked the way that Robert was trying so hard to not have to fight these jerks and trust me, these mafia guys are just horrible and you want them to get what is coming to them. However, you also want Robert to get his retirement and just wish that they would take his advice and go away and leave this town alone.
You probably do not need me to tell you this, but Denzel Washington is amazing as always in this movie. I do not think that I have ever seen a bad Denzel performance and he carries this entire movie on his own. The other actors are good and play their parts well, but I would challenge you to tell me any other character apart from his, name after you have seen the movie.
A Bit Too Long
I will say that it does run just a little bit long and I am kind of shocked at myself for saying this, but you could have cut the whole plot with Dakota Fannings Agent Collins-Pulmer and the movie would have been no worse for it. That is nothing against her or the performance and to be fair, it does come full circle at the end, but if they wanted to shave a bit of time off the movie that was the way to do it.
Final Recommendation
I highly recommend that you make the effort to go and see The Equalizer 3. If you have forgotten just how good those first two movies were, be sure to watch them before you see this. I had a blast with this one and while I would not go and see it in the theatre again, I am sure I will pick it up on 4K when it is released.
