The Fall Guy was a show that I remember watching in the late 80s when it was still being aired in syndication as my dad loved the show. I was not a massive fan, but we did have the video game tie in for the ZX Spectrum which I did enjoy. Actually, when I saw the first trailer for the 2024 movie adaptation of The Fall Guy, it was that old video game that came to mind, not the TV series.

The Movie Review
A Promising Team Behind the Film
On paper, The Fall Guy is a movie that I should have loved! Brought to us by director David Leitch who has done stuff like Deadpool 2, John Wick, and Bullet Train. The trailers that I saw for this movie looked like a ton of fun. They also nailed the casting here with Ryan Goslin as the lead, fresh off people loving him in Barbie. Plus, who doesn’t love Emily Blunt?
Plot Summary
This may sound dramatic here, but The Fall Guy is a prime example of what I personally think is wrong with the cinema-going experience today. Hey, I am not at all saying that I hated this movie, but at the same time, it was not great either. The trailer tells you everything that you need to know about the plot of the movie.
Colt Seavers is a Hollywood stuntman who ends up getting a job as a stuntman in his ex’s new movie. While working as a stuntman on his ex’s movie is tricky, he also finds himself at the center of a plot that sees him needing to rescue the leading man. Look, Ryan Goslin, Emily Blunt, Aaron Taylor Johnson, and Hannah Waddington are fine, but I am not exaggerating when I say that the whole trailer tells you like 99 percent of the plot of the movie.
Trailer Spoilers
That is the first thing that The Fall Guy has going against it and to be fair so many movies these days are desperate to get people into the theatre, they show all the good stuff in the trailer. The action scenes in The Fall Guy are epic, the back and forth with Emily Blunt and Ryan Goslin is fun, but you see it all in the trailer!
Cinema Pricing and Streaming Release
The other two reasons why this was not a great cinema-going experience are also tied to things that I feel are wrong with modern cinema. To start with, pricing! The expense for a family of let’s say two adults and two kids to buy tickets, buy snacks, pay for parking, petrol, and whatever makes going to the cinema a rather expensive day out. It is hard for people to take a gamble on a movie they are not 100 percent sold on anymore.
Also, The Fall Guy is hitting streaming soon and the version I saw advertised for streaming said that it had stuff that was not shown in the theatre!!! So why the heck did I pay to see this in the theatre when I could have waited just a few weeks and watched a potentially better version of the movie for less money? The Fall Guy is still in theatres now, why would anyone pay to see it in the theatre when they have already announced this “better” version that is coming to streaming soon?
Final Thoughts
The Fall Guy was not bad, but it was quite a predictable and average action movie. To be honest, if it were not for the bait-and-switch of that better version coming to streaming so soon, I probably would have scored this higher. There is fun to be had here, but the way it was released leaves a really bad taste in my mouth. I would highly recommend you do not go and see this in the theatre and just wait for it to hit streaming.
