The Green Knight

I have to admit until my sister got me The Green Knight for Christmas, I had no idea this movie even existed! This is brought to us by David Lowery and it is a medieval fantasy epic that completely clicked with me. Hidden gem is a term that is way too overused these days, but that is honestly the best way I can think to describe this movie.

The Movie Review

It is set during the days of King Arthur and that right there is awesome! King Arthur is holding a feast at Christmas time and one of the guests is his nephew Gawain. A spell is cast and it summons forth the mythical Green Knight! The Green Knight looks awesome, I really do love his design. I do not think the movie had a high budget, but it still looks great.

The Green Knight stands before the round table and says that any knight who can step forward and land a blow on him will get his green ax. Gawain (played by Dev Patel) steps forward and takes the Green Knights’ head! The Green Knight pretty much laughs this off and proclaims that Gawain must head to The Green Chapel the next year and take a blow from The Green Knight.

One thing that I did not expect was that you could technically class The Green Knight as a Christmas movie as it is set at Christmas time. Actually, there is no technicality about it, I have just proclaimed (in a King Arthur style voice) that The Green Knight shall now be known as a Christmas movie! This is going to be a movie that is added to my Christmas viewing each year I can assure you of that.

The whole movie to me feels like a fantasy adventure that could have come out back in the 1980s and I mean that in the most complimentary way. Of course, on his quest to meet The Green Knight, Gawain gets into many other adventures such as being ambushed, having to find a ghost’s head, and encountering these giant beings. He even befriends a talking fox that joins him on his quest.

The movie clocks in at a little over the two hours mark and it absolutely zooms past. It is a movie that really does take you on an adventure and you feel like you are there with Gawain the whole way. It is shot beautifully and the fantasy world that has been created here (which I would later learn is based on a poem from the 14th century) is something I was captivated by.

I really cannot sing the praises of The Green Knight highly enough. They do not really make fantasy movies of this quality much these days so that really makes this movie stand out. I was in on Gawain’s quest from the very start of the movie and I am certain that anyone else who watches this will be too. If you enjoy fantasy movies, you have to check this out.
