The Film Review
The Plot
Released on 7th September 2018, The Hate U Give revolves around a black girl named Starr Carter who studies in a predominantly white school. One night, after sounds of guns going off, Starr travels back home with one of her childhood best friends named Khalil.
They are stopped by a white officer who ends up killing Khalil after assuming that he is possessing a gun. Khalil’s death becomes publicly known and riots break out in the area.
The general black population begins to claim that the justice system is flawed. Starr initially hesitates but comes forward as a witness without revealing her identity.
She blames the King Lords, a local black gang that has caused violence and killings in the Garden Heights -the society where Starr lives-. She soon testifies against the gang after which, she is forced to move with her uncle Carlos due to the death threats received.
It is revealed that Starr’s father was also once a member of King Lords and was even sent to prison for a crime he did not commit. He left the gang only on the condition that he would take the blame for their leader’s crime.
Starr’s role affects her relationship with her friends but regardless, she receives constant unconditional support from her boyfriend Chris. Soon, King, the leader of the gang, as well as the individual who lives with Starr’s half-brother, attacks her father’s store. Starr manages to escape, however, as the police arrive, her younger brother Sekani is seen pointing a gun towards King. The film ends with Starr intervening in between them and breaking them up before vowing to keep Khalil’s memories alive.
The Movie Production
Angie Thomas’ novel (2017) has been perfectly represented in George Tillman’s daring tale of cruelty. The film raises questions about the justice system as well as the social corruption that is widespread within the depths of many high schools.
As per Starr’s own words, the high school she attended was where “you go to get drunk, high, pregnant, or killed”. The discussion of racism and violence is one that makes the film is an eyeopener for all the authoritative entities and institutions that claim to be the champions of human rights.
The Music in The Hate U Give
The main score of the film is composed by Dustin O’ Halloran and was officially released on 5th October 2018 by Milan Records. The film also contains songs by Tupac Shakur.
