The Hitman’s Bodyguard (2017) is one of the most fun action comedies to be released in a very long time. The movie is directed by Patrick Hughes and from start all the way to the credits it is an absolute riot. It has a fantastic cast and a whole bunch of likable characters that make you smile and laugh for the whole two hours.

The Movie Review
The cast of the movie features Ryan Reynolds as Michael Bryce who is an elite bodyguard who protects some of the most important people all around the world. On a routine job, one of Bryce’s clients ends up killed and it sends him sparling on a downward slope that ends up with him having to take far less attractive jobs.
On the flip side of this, we have Darius Kincaid who is played by Samuel L. Jackson. Kincaid is one of the most fearsome hitmen in the world and he has been pulled in by Interpol to testify against Dukhovich (Gary Oldman) who is a dictator of Belarus. They have some leverage over Kincaid as his wife Sonia (Salma Hayek) is in prison and if he helps, they will release her.
One cast member that I love is Interpol agent, Roussel who is played by Elodie Yung. Yung does not get the same love that Reynolds, Jackson, and Hayek get for this movie, but I think she plays her part very well too. Anyway, she has a past with Bryce and as Interpol has been compromised and now Kincaid is a target, she enlists Bryce to help get Kincaid to the trial so that he can testify.
The real charm of The Hitman’s Bodyguard is the relationship between Bryce and Kincaid. Samuel L. Jackson and Ryan Reynolds have fantastic chemistry together on the screen. Seeing Bryce overcome what happened to him and Kincaid learn that he has to trust other people is great character development. This gives the movie a lot more depth in addition to all the laughs and the awesome action set pieces that are all over the place.
Movies that mix action and comedy together have been around for decades, but I would put The Hitman’s Bodyguard right up there near the top of the recent crop. I just do not see how it is possible not to have a great time while watching this movie. It features some fantastic action scenes and shootouts that have you on the edge of your seat.
The laughs that the movie provides feel very organic too and not completely over the top. It also has a bit of heart and romance in here too which I got a real kick out of, especially in regards to the way Sonia and Darius Kincaid were with each other. I am a huge Salma Hayek fan and this is one of my favorite rolls of hers.
The Hitman’s Bodyguard would be followed up by 2021’s The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard and while it did not review as well by the critics, I think I do prefer that as Hayek has a much larger role. I highly recommend that you check this and its sequel out if you are in the mood for something action-packed that is going to make you laugh!
