The Film Review

The film is set in the year 1955 as it revolves around a ten-year-old boy named Lewis Barnavelt who, after his parents died in a car crash, moves to live with his uncle Jonathan.

Before her death, Lewis’ mother gave him a magic 8-ball which he still keeps with him as a token of remembrance. Soon, Lewis finds out that his uncle is actually a Warlock and that his neighbor Florence is a witch. Lewis explains how a sinister Warlock named Isaac who previously lived in this house had died but left a secret unknown clock hidden in the house that he is currently trying to find.

Jonathan and Florence find blueprints that discuss the mechanisms of the clock which they then try to decipher. Meanwhile, in order to impress his friend Tarby, Lewis uses a forbidden necromancy spell that summons the ghost of Isaac.

This, in turn, causes chaos as Florence and Jonathan’s magic stops making any effect. Jonathan, along with Florence, takes Lewis to a café where they learn about the functions of the clock: a doomsday device that is set to reverse time to an era before humans even existed.

The trio then return to destroy the key that activates the clock but they find out that Jonathan’s house has already been raided by Isaac. They are then suddenly captured by the evil warlock who explains that the key is made from his accomplice Selena’s bones who is disguised as Jonathan’s neighbor Mrs. Henchett.

Isaac also reveals he contacted the evil demon Azazel and made a deal with him to reverse the clock in exchange for more power. The trio then escape after which Lewis uses his magic 8-ball to discover the location of the clock under the boiler room.

An action sequence takes place resulting in Lewis destroying both Isaac and Selena. The sequence ends as Lewis returns to school in a more confident manner and gets his revenge on Tarby for betraying him earlier.

The House With A Clock In Its Walls: the Movie Production

According to the VFX supervisor, the film was low on budget initially but seeing the potential present in the storyline, the producers decided to enhance their spending for the visual effects, which approximately reached over 800 shots by the end of the sequence. The animation and designing had to be done from scratch before they could be passed on to the 3D assembling machinery.

It gives its viewers magical fairy-tale vibes along with combining with that typical horror essence.
