I knew nothing about the book, The Housemaid, before I saw the movie, but I did know that those who read it spoke very highly of it. The Housemaid is a tense thriller that I was very excited to see, as I am a big fan of Amanda Seyfried and Sydney Sweeney. I saw the trailer and thought that it looked very interesting, and I went in, expecting something, and ended up getting something pretty different.
Where to Watch The Housemaid
The Housemaid was released on December 19, 2025. You can expect to be able to stream the film from digital platforms such as Amazon Prime Video several months after its theatrical relase.
The Housemaid Movie Review: Tension, Twists, and Thrills
As I have not read the book, I cannot speak to how faithful an adaptation it is, but I can tell you, I was hooked, pretty much right from the start. Sydney Sweeney plays the role of a young woman called Millie. Millie is on parole, living in her car, and in a very desperate situation. Things are really bad for her, and her being sent back to prison, unless she can find a place to stay and a job, is a very real possibility.
Amanda Seyfried and Sydney Sweeney
Well, Millie thinks she has hit the jackpot when a housemaid position falls into her lap. Telling more than a few lies, Mille ends up getting an interview at the home of Nina Winchester, played by Amanda Seyfried. Nina thinks that she is unsuccessful, but after a little while, Nina calls her and offers her the position. Her job will be to look after the house and her daughter, Cece.
Also living here is Andrew, Nina’s handsome and very rich husband, played by Brandon Sklenar. The whole cast does a great job in this movie, and it would be unfair to single any of them out. At first, Nina seems super nice, and this job appears to be the miracle that Millie had been looking for. It is almost like it is too good to be true, and that is certainly the case!
The Housemaid’s Hidden Horrors and Psychological Tension
However, the first red flag is that her room is the attic room that does not have a window that opens, and it also has a door that locks from the outside! Right away, Nina starts acting super erratically, and it is pretty shocking in the things that she says and does. You can tell that she clearly has something wrong with her, and the way she treats Millie can be very hard to watch.
Unexpected Plot Twist in The Housemaid Will Leave You Speechless
Right away, you think that Millie is going to be in for a fight for her life against Nina, but this movie has a truly epic twist, and it was a twist I did not see coming at all. If you are not familiar with the book, go into this as blind as you can. Sure, this starts off cliché as hell, but that twist hits pretty hard.
The twist hits so hard that there are some very uncomfortable scenes in this movie that had me on the edge of my seat and wincing pretty damn hard! I think the fact that all of the actors nail their parts is what really sells the whole story that is being told here. It is done so well that even though I know exactly what is going to happen, I am excited to watch this again at some point in 2026.
The Housemaid Box Office and Sequel Potential
I went to see The Housemaid during the period between Christmas and New Year, and it was close to a sell-out! This has done very well at the box office, which I hope means that they will make a sequel, as it certainly leaves the door open for one. If you love tense thrillers that keep you on edge, this is a must-watch!
