I have to be honest, had it not been for my niece, I probably would have gone the rest of my life without seeing The King of Kings! I was taking her to the movies, and this was the movie that she picked. While I was less than thrilled, my niece loved it and I can hand on heart say that this is a fun movie for the whole family. It is certainly not the greatest animated movie I have seen, but it was very entertaining and way better than I thought it was going to be.

The Movie Review
Angel Studios Delivers Another Family Hit
Brought to us by Angel Studios, who specialize in movies about faith, Christianity, and all that good stuff. A couple of years back, Sony Pictures Animation made The Star, and that was a pretty fun time and a great example of how to do a religious story in animation right. I think The King of Kings would be an awesome movie for a Sunday School to show kids. Sunday School was a bit of a drab when I was a kid, but I would have loved seeing something like this.
A Charles Dickens Twist to the Story of Jesus
While The King of Kings is the story of Jesus, this movie is actually based on the Charles Dickens story, The Life of Our Lord, and it presents this story is a very interesting way. For me, the real star of this movie is Walter Dickens, Charles young son who is disrupting a telling of A Christmas Carol. Walter is such a loveable kid, he is obsessed with King Arthur.
A Unique Perspective on the Life of Jesus
When dealing with Walter for disrupting the play once they get home, Charles asks Walter if he wants to hear a story about a king, but not just any king, the King of Kings! With Walter being so interested in the stories and adventures of King Arthur, he agrees and is captivated by the story of Jesus.
Now, that alone makes The King of Kings an interesting way to tell this story. However, there is another twist, as Charles is telling the story, Walter is seeing himself with Jesus as his life story is told. It is a very unique way to tell this story and I thought that it was very charming and my niece was clearly captivated by it and very entertained.
A Star-Studded Voice Cast Brings the Story to Life
I knew nothing and I mean nothing about this movie before we showed up on the Saturday morning that we went to see this. However, when I saw the cast, I was blown away, Mark Hamill, Uma Thurman, Kenneth Branagh, Pierce Brosnan. Oscar Isaac, Sir Ben Kingsley, and Forrest Whitaker all lend their voices to this movie, and I am sure that I am missing some! It is insane the amount of talent they have for this. Actually, the other Christian animated movie I mentioned before, The Star, also had a stacked voice cast.
Family-Friendly Entertainment with Depth
Sure, some may be put off by The King of Kings being a religious movie, but at the end of the day, this is a fun way to tell this story, and I am sure most younger kids will love it. Although my niece had some pretty tricky questions after the movie ended, questions I was not qualified to answer, so I filled her with snacks to distract her, talked about something else, and suggested that any questions about Jesus are best for mum and dad, as they are experts. My sister did not thank me for this.
