The Last Airbender

Not content with ruining Dragon Ball Z with Dragonball Evolution one year prior, Hollywood also had to ruin Avatar: The Last Airbender with this god-awful adaptation. I am a fan of M. Night Shyamalan, I like more of his movies than I dislike, but this is by far the worst thing that he has put his name to.

A Fan’s Disappointment: Reviewing The Last Airbender

The Last Airbender is based on the early season of the show and when you read the synopsis it sounds like it would be quite faithful. However, The Last Airbender fails in every way imaginable! Not only is this a very, very poor adaptation of a beloved animated series, but even those who know nothing about the show, but thought the trailer looked cool hated this!

Where The Last Airbender Went Wrong

In the world in which the movie is set, there are four kingdoms, one for Water, one for Fire, one for Earth, and one for Air. There is a special being called The Avatar that can use all of the elements and they are pretty much the peacekeeper. There has been harmony for years, but the Fire Kingdom has risen to power and wants to rule everything for itself.

Young Aang has been missing for quite some time. Aang was found by Katara and Sokka and they are going to help him on his quest to master the elements and bring peace to the land. Even as I write this, the premise is sound and it does sound like at the very least, it is going to follow the premise of the show. I am sure for those unfamiliar with the show, it sounds like a plot for a cool fantasy-style movie.

A Critical Look at The Last Airbender’s Failures

The problem is, The Last Airbender is just pure garbage from start to end! I hated and I mean hated this movie! I watched it with my son a couple of years after it came out as he loved the show and even he, a kid hated it! The special effects and the sets are not horrific to be fair, or at the time they were not. However, I watched this again recently to see if it was as bad as I remembered it being and the CG has not aged gracefully at all.

Why The Last Airbender Is Best Left Unwatched

The Last Airbender comes in at a little over 90 minutes and it is a real slog to get through. If you have seen the show, you will feel like the people who made this movie never watched an episode! If you have not seen the show, you will be turned off by the wafer-thin plot, one-dimensional characters, and over-the-top laughable acting.

In Conclusion: Avoiding The Last Airbender

There are some movies that are bad, but they are so bad and cheesy that they are fun, this is not one of those movies! This is just straight-up bad and I was shocked to read that it did actually make a bit of a profit! There are two things that I can say about this movie, first of all, Dragonball Evolution is actually a worse adaptation than this is and secondly, the Netflix live-action Avatar series is a massive improvement. There is zero and I mean zero reason for you to watch this!
