The Last Voyage of the Demeter is a movie that my wife and I really struggled to go and see! It came out at a time when there were many other movies we wanted to see and we were busy with it being summer vacation. Add to this the fact that it was not exactly getting amazing reviews and it looked like we may have to give this one a miss, but our theatre had one showing of this last week so we decided to jump on it while we could.

The Last Voyage of the Demeter: An Unseen Adventure – The Movie Review
As I write this, I live a short drive away from Whitby, Whitby is very proud of their history of Dracula and it is something I always get a kick out of when we go to Whitby for the day. Add to this that I am a huge vampire fan and The Last Voyage of the Demeter was a movie that I did intend to see and enjoy. To be honest, I think a lot of the scathing reviews this is getting are uncalled for. Sure, it is not amazing, but it is also not bad either.

A Different Dracula Story
Dracula is a story that has been told to death at this point, but what is interesting about The Last Voyage of the Demeter is that it focuses on just a very small section of the book which I thought was quite a unique approach to take. We also had Renfield this year, so we got two movies about Dracula that are not your typical Dracula story in one year which is awesome.

The premise of The Last Voyage of the Demeter is about the boat trip from Carpathia to London and what happened to the crew on board. Now, this is not really a spoiler as it is common knowledge, but the lord of darkness himself is on board the ship and this is basically about how the crew are stalked and killed before the ship shows up in England without a soul alive on board.
Visual Appeal and Atmosphere
The first thing I will say is that this movie looks great! The actual ship looks amazing and the way that we hear it creek and crack as the waves pound it is amazing and almost makes it a character in itself. However, I will say that this movie is very, very dark! It can be hard to see all the little details which does add a bit more suspense, but I have a feeling if you were watching this at home, it would be even harder to see!
Lengthy Journey: A Slight Overstay?
The biggest problem that I had with The Last Voyage of the Demeter was that it lasted just a bit too long. You are looking at around two hours for this movie and I think they could have shaved 15 minutes off and it would have been all the better for it. There are several occasions where we get dialogue sections in the movie that say pretty much the exact thing we have heard just before!
Final Verdict: A Misjudged Release?
In all, I am glad that I was able to see this in the theatre before it was pulled. By all accounts, this has been a bit of a flop at the box office. I do not think that it deserves the negative reviews it is getting, but I do question them releasing this when so many other big movies were released during the same time period! I do also have to say that I did not find the movie scary at all so do not expect to be jumping out of your skin!
