I will not lie, The Proposal is about as predictable as it gets when it comes to romantic comedies. Yet, this is such a charming, fun, and sweet movie that you cannot help, but smile when the credits start rolling. Even though, you knew about ten minutes into the movie that what happened was how it was going to end.
How to Download The Proposal
The Proposal was released on June 19, 2009. You can download or stream the film from a digital platform. Click on the Download button at the end of this review and make your choice. If you like Sandra Bullock and romantic comedies, check her out in The Lost City.
The Movie Review
With The Proposal being so predictable, I would usually tell people who are not into romantic comedies to stay away. However, I feel that the cast here is so much fun and Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock have such great chemistry that even the most love-hating Grinch wannabe could still have a fun time with this.
The Cast
I saw this in the theatre when it was first released back in 2009 and I saw it again a few years later, I recently just watched it again on streaming and I still think that this is an enjoyable romantic comedy. We have Sandra Bullock playing the role of Margarete. Margarete is the head of this big New York publishing house and she is a witch with a capital B if you know what I am saying! All her staff hate her and people try to avoid her if they can.
Ryan Reynolds plays her assistant Andrew. Andrew has his own dreams and wants to make it in the world of publishing, but Margaret never really gives him a chance. After all these years, I have yet to see Ryan Reynolds in a role that does not make me just love the guy. Hell, even in The Amityville Haunting I liked him!
The Plot Twist
Turns out that Margarete is in some real trouble. You see, Margaret is Canadian and her visa renewal has been declined and she faces deportation! This leads to Margaret to talk Andrew into posing as her fiancé so that she can get a green card so that she can stay in the country. The thing is, an immigration agent called Gilbertson suspects that they are committing fraud and keeps a close eye on the pair
The Journey
Trying to keep up the charade, Andrew and Margaret head to Andrew’s family’s place to try and convince everyone of what is happening. Look, you have two people forced to pretend they are in love who do not like each other, you do not need me to spell out where this is going at all.
The Charm
Yet, despite The Proposal being one of the most obvious and predictable romantic comedies you will ever see, you get sucked into it all because Andrew and Margaret get fleshed out and you see them as real and relatable people in many ways. You want these two to get together and be happy!
Supporting Cast
While Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock are the stars, I love the supporting cast here. Dennis O’Hare who I love in American Horror Story is awesome as the immigration agent. We have the legendary Betty White as Andrew’s grandma and we even have Oscar from The Office, playing the role of Ramone who is working as a stripper. Plus, I have to say that Malin Akerman is awesome and adorable as always as Andrew’s ex, Gertrude.
Final Thoughts
I enjoyed watching The Proposal again recently. I remember liking it when I saw it before, but I ended up liking it more than I remembered. It is just a fun feel-good romantic comedy that is perfect if you need something to cheer you up or just make you feel good. It makes for an awesome movie if you are looking for something nice and heartfelt for an at-home date night.
