The Secret Life of Pets 2 is a downloadable movie that I was really excited to check out. So much so that I insisted we went to McDonald’s to get the tie in Happy Meal on the way. The first movie was a hit so there were fairly high expectations for this sequel. Does it live up to the hype or is it a pile your dog left on the rug?

The Film Review

As much as I liked the first movie, I felt that some of the violence and the whole pets being abandoned thing was kind of dark. The Secret Life of Pets 2 is certainly more of a “comedy” than the first in that it does not have the more serious aspects that the first one did. I actually preferred this, but I think it will be 50/50 on what the movie-going audience thinks.

The cast is great, Patton Oswald is Max who is the main character, but it is Kevin Hart as the bunny Snowball that once again steals the show for me. Eric Stonestreet and Jenny Slate return too and they are both great. I really think that this is the kind of movie where every kid and adult that goes to see it will have their favorite character.

While the characters are very strong the story is kind of all over the place. The main “deal” of the story is that Max’s life is kind of turned upside down when his owner has a baby. Max gets super nervous and eventually has to wear a cone. The family takes a trip to the countryside where a variety of things go down. Honestly, if I had to pick a main plot point of this movie, I am really not sure exactly what it is.

There are subplots ranging from Max’s toy going missing to the rescue of a tiger. Snowball is like a superhero as he and one of the new characters, Daisy try to save a tiger from the circus. This for me is the major highlight of the movie and I have to say that they could probably get some kind of spin-off with Snowball out of this.

The comedy is very slapstick and over the top and it suits the movie very well. I know that the tone of the movie could be described as dumbed down in comparison to the first, but it does give you some laughs. I am sure that the movie is going to be a real winner for much younger kids and those of us who despite being in their 30s appreciate potty humor!

In all, I am not sure that I would say that The Secret Life of Pets 2 is a better movie than the first, but it is a good time. If you are looking for a movie to take the kids to that you will also get a few laughs out of then you really cannot go wrong. Plus, Kevin Hart is at his over the top best in this and it is awesome!
