The Film Review
The Secret Life of Pets revolves around a Jack Russell Terrier named Max who becomes jealous when his owner, a human named Katie, adopts a large mongrel from the pound, named Duke.
Max’s terrible attitude towards Duke enrages him after which he tries to abandon him in an alley. Duke’s plan goes haywire when a sphynx cat named Ozone removes their collars, leaving them to be caught by the Animal Control. The duo is rescued by the anti-human underground establishment named The Flushed Pets who are led by a rabbit named Snowball.
Snowball turns against them after finding out how both of them are domesticated animals which forces the duo to escape. Meanwhile, back at Katie’s apartment, a white Pomeranian named Gidget, who also has a secret crush on Max, recruits the rest of the pets and go on a journey to search for him outside.
After being encouraged by Max, Duke goes to his old owner’s apartment who is revealed to have passed away. This enrages Duke who accuses Max of getting rid of him, leading him to bark out loud and calling the Animal Control in order to capture Max.
Despite his rage, Duke still saves Max and allows himself to be captured. At the same time, Snowball appears and joins forces with Max after having his own team captured.
The two then manage to save Duke and Snowball’s accomplices who, after initially trying to kill Max, go back to their underground layer. The film ends as Snowball gets adopted, against his will, by a little girl named Molly whereas, Max, Duke and the rest of the group go back and reunite with Katie.
The Movie Production
Filmmakers, along with director Chris Renaud show great maturity in the production of this film through its sleek animation design and colorful visual effects.
According to Renaud himself, one of the most difficult challenges faced was coming up with the movie idea. Previously having directed successful films like Despicable Me and Despicable Me 2, Renaud described how he and his team worked hard to design the animated characters, especially the details regarding their fur which basically defined the types of dogs they were.
The Secret Life of Pets: the Music
In addition to that, the original score of the film was composed by Alexandre Desplat. It was officially released on 1st July 2016 by Back Lot Music.
The Bottom Line
The Secret Life of Pets did considerably well at the box office by grossing over $875 million. The film also gives everyone an important lesson in terms of taking care of their pets. The feelings defined by the characters of Max and Duke depict how real animals feel when they become neglected by their owners. Hence, the film is a salute and a tribute to all our pets whom we truly love.
