Even as an adult, I have a soft spot for SpongeBob. The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run, is the third SpongeBob movie and I thought that it was a fun watch. I would put it in the middle right between the awesome original SpongeBob movie and the less-than-great, Sponge Out of Water movie.

The Movie Review
The release of this is a bit odd as it is both a Paramount + and a Netflix Original, it just depends on where in the world you live. For me, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run is a Netflix Original. I watched this for the first time since it first hit Netflix and I thought that it was a funny and charming SpongeBob story.
Once again, Plankton is trying to get his hands on the Krabby Patty formula and ruin his rival Mr. Krabs! Plankton realizes that the reason his schemes fail is not because of Mr. Krabs, but because of SpongeBob! This leads him to hatch a plan to get rid of SpongeBob and cause a domino effect that will see the Krusty Krab fall once and for all.
No spoilers, but SpongeBob’s beloved snail, Gary ends up in the hands of King Poseidon who plans to use his slime to keep his youthful and beautiful appearance. King Poseidon rules over the long lost city of Atlantic City which is a place of gambling, bright lights, and all kinds of crazy behavior. It is such a fun and “SpongeBob” take on the real Atlantic City and Las Vegas.
This leads SpongeBob and Patrick on a wild and crazy adventure to try and get Gary back before it is too late. This is just a fun and typical SpongeBob story. It has some great moments. My favorite moment is when they end up in a Wild West-style town and have to face an evil dude called El Diablo who is voiced by Danny Trejo.
The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run has an amazing cast. Keanu Reeves plays the Sage who offers SpongeBob and Patrick wisdom and is hilarious. There are also fun roles for the likes of Snoop Dogg and Awkwafina. I like how some characters are done in live-action and others are animated.
Speaking of the animation, rather than using the traditional 2D animation that we associate with SpongeBob. The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run is a computer-generated animated movie and it looks great. They keep that classic SpongeBob style, but the fact this was done via computer animation lets them do some pretty cool and wacky stuff in the movie.
If you like SpongeBob and his crazy antics, you will like The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run it is as simple as that. It is a fun story that adults can get some laughs out of just as much as the kids can. I would not say that it is an all-time classic, but I had fun with it during my second viewing and I would not be against watching this again at a later date.
