The Untouchables

The Untouchables is a crime thriller from 1987 and it is a movie that I have always had a lot of love for. It features Robert DeNiro and Kevin Costner going head to head as Al Capone and Elliot Ness and that is awesome. It also has an amazing supporting cast with Sean Connery, Andy Garcia, and Charles Martin Smith.

The Movie Review

While The Untouchables came out in 1987, I did not see it until the summer of 1990 and that is perhaps why the movie tugs at my nostalgia strings. I was having a sleepover at a friend’s house and his older brother had The Untouchables, but not the movie, the video game for the Atari ST. I had never heard of the movie, let alone the game, but the image of a dude standing on the box with a gun was enough to make me want to play it.

We played the hell out of that game all night and as a result, really wanted to see the movie as my friend’s dad saw us playing it and told us that it was based on a movie. If the game was this good the movie had to be amazing. Our mission for the next week was to see that movie and thankfully, the following weekend we had another sleepover and we were allowed to rent the movie and it did not disappoint.

The basics of the story in The Untouchables are that we have Kevin Coster as Elliot Ness and during the days of prohibition in Chicago, he is the man that is tasked with keeping the city dry. Kevin Costner is very believable as Elliot Ness, he is a badass, but not in an in-your-face way like Van Damme, Stallone or Arnie is.

The story is actually loosely based on the real-life events of this case. Elliot Ness is tasked with bringing down Al Capone who basically runs Chicago thanks to his crime empire. The thing is, Al Capone has a vast number of people in the police force and beyond on his payroll so getting to him is easier said than done.

The Untouchables Team

Elliot Ness though is not going to just let Capone get away with things! Ness forms a team of men that he can trust, men who will not be bought by Capone and they are known as The Untouchables. They start to put a dent in Capone’s “business” and it all leads to a big showdown. It is great and entertaining stuff and while I would not say that this is a full-on action movie, even as a kid, I found this very entertaining stuff.

Final Thoughts

I picked this up on 4K last year thanks to some Amazon gift cards that I had and it is a great 4K release. The movie holds up very well to this day and it has a great blend of drama, action, and amazing acting performances. Unfortunately, while that Atari ST game is certainly a very great memory I have, I have tried to play that again and it has not aged as gracefully as the movie has, that is for sure.
