The Witcher (TV series)

While I loved The Witcher 3, I must admit that is my only experience with the franchise. The Witcher from Netflix is based on the popular series of books more so than the games. It stars Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia and it has proven to be a pretty big hit for Netflix, so much so that it got a second season greenlit very early on.

The Movie Review

There are three main characters in The Witcher. Geralt is a man who will hunt monsters as long as someone is willing to pay him. Herny Cavill is fantastic in this role and many of my favorite moments were him fighting monsters. The whole show has some truly awesome fight choreography.

We also have Princess Ciri who is played by Freya Allen. I thought out of the main cast that she was the weakest. We know that Ciri is linked to Geralt and that she has magic powers, but her whole story arc to me felt like it was cut so that they could get the show to fit into eight episodes. She was one character that I wished I knew more about by the end of the series.

The character I liked the most was Yennefer, played by Anya Chalotra. Yennefer felt like she had the most character development in the show and as a result, I cared about her and her story arc the most. Seeing her go from this deformed woman who is kind of ignored to a powerful sorceress was something I thought was really cool.

As far as fantasy-based TV shows go I think that The Witcher is a pretty darn good one. While it may not have the budget like Game of Thrones, they work really well with what they have and some of the CG is done very well. I will say that the action is what entertained me the most, but I do feel there was a good story trying to get out.

I am not saying that the story was bad or anything like that, but I just feel that the show could have perhaps used a couple more episodes. It can become very confusing and hard to keep track of, this is certainly a show that you cannot be messing around on your phone while you are watching it.

I have watched the whole series twice and I will say that it was far better the second time around. I felt that I took more in and got to know the characters better. Perhaps if I had been more familiar with the books, I would have gotten more out of the show on my first viewing. I will say that the show made me want to dive into the books and that is a good thing.

Overall, I think that The Witcher is a pretty solid show. It may have some pacing issues and the characters are not all that deep, but it is still a fun watch. I am certainly looking forward to the second season when it airs on Netflix this December. If you watched it and were not keen, I suggest you give it another go as you will take more in on your second viewing.
