The Film Review
After learning that his father Odin has been missing from his homeland Asgard, Thor escapes from the prison and takes Loki with him to search for his father on Earth. After finding Odin residing in Norway, who is also about to die, Thor and Loki find out that the death of their father will unleash Hela, Odin’s first-born child. Hela is known to have fought with Odin years ago and is considered to be very strong. Thor and Loki must now put their differences in order to stop Hela from destroying Asgard and from taking over the rest of the universe.
The third installment of the Marvel Studios franchise (the first movie was simply entitled Thor and was released in 2001) has once again taken over the viewers’ hearts by storm. One of the major reasons why the movie has managed to hit up to $854 million is because of the quality of the visual effects used. The visual effects of the film were created by a company known as Industrial Light & Magic.
According to the director Taika Waititi, Thor: Ragnarok is a film which heavily relies on visual effects and is one of the most involved projects he has ever worked on. The special effects team, through much effort, has managed to perfectly display and synchronize Mark Ruffalo’s footsteps into that of The Incredible Hulk. The world of virtual reality helped make shooting easier for most of the cast as they could see themselves in their transformed state just by looking in the mirror!
Moving on to the music, the film’s main soundtrack was performed by Mark Allen Mothersbaugh, a veteran in the music industry who has over 40 years of experience producing music. Taika Waititi commended the soundtrack as he explained how he preferred the type of music which would suit the main theme of the movie as “a cool, bold colorful cosmic adventure”.
Although the theme of the film was considered to be more or less serious, some of the character dialogues and actions did not hold back in making the audience laugh through their humor. That combined with the action involved in trying to save the universe from Hela, gives the film a perfect balance but despite that, the film has been criticized by its viewers for involving unnecessary humor in a relatively serious film.
In addition to that, fans also complained about the dynamic between Loki and Thor has been oversold and Loki as a character is being dragged in the film without having any real reason of being featured.
All in all, the film has been a commercial success. The chemistry of action and humor combined makes the movie both fun and interesting to watch until the very end.
