Following up from 1995’s GoldenEye was no easy feat for 1997’s Tomorrow Never Dies, but this is a movie I have come to like more each time I have seen it. I watched this again recently as I have been going through the Bond movies and I think I may like it just a tad more than GoldenEye.
How to Download Tomorrow Never Dies
Tomorrow Never Dies was released on 12 December 1997. You can download or stream the film from a digital platform. Click on the Download button at the end of this review and make your choice.
Pierce Brosnan Shines as James Bond in Tomorrow Never Dies – the Movie Review
This would be the second time that Pierce Brosnan would play the role of Bond and while I thought that he was great in GoldenEye, I think that he comes across as way more natural, suave, and cool this time around. Most people have their own favorite James Bond and for me, I think that it is always going to be Pierce Brosnan.
Terri Hatcher and Michelle Yeoh: A Strong Bond Babe Duo
We also get two awesome “Bond babes” in Tomorrow Never Dies, first of all, Terri Hatcher who thanks to being in Superman was one of the hottest women on the planet at the time. She plays the role of a former love interest of Bond called Paris who is now the girlfriend of the bad guy in the movie. However, it is Michelle Yeoh as Wai Lin who I love in this movie as she is so badass, she is a Chinese agent who has to work with Bond and they make for a great pairing.
A Media Mogul Villain and a World War III Plot
The plot on paper is quite simple, we have this crazy media mogul called Elliot Carver who is like a super crazy person because he is so rich and feels that he can do what he wants and he wants to start World War III. The way Carver is trying to start World War III is by causing trouble between the UK and China. I think that Jonathan Price as Carver is a pretty solid villain. Bond and Lin have to work together to show that the tension between the UK and China is being caused by this Carver led terrorist group, which is far easier said than done.
Action-Packed and Classic Bond Style
Tomorrow Never Dies has some fantastic action set pieces and I would certainly not argue with anyone who said that the movie is more style over substance. However, this is exactly what I like in a Bond movie. I like the car chases, the crazy over the top stunts, and Bond trying (and usually succeeding) to score with some beautiful woman. This has all of that and it never tries to do anything more and I am more than ok with that, but at the same time, I can see why some people would maybe want something a little bit more.
The Disappointing Tomorrow Never Dies Video Game
Before I close out my thoughts on the movie, I want to talk about the Tomorrow Never Dies video game that came out for PlayStation. GoldenEye was such a massive hit on the Nintendo 64 that Tomorrow Never Dies had a lot to live up to. Well, the video game adaptation game kind of sucks, it is an average at best 3rd person shooter with clunky controls, and terrible visuals and it came out way too late. GoldenEye got away with not coming out right when the movie did, but this game did not. It was a massive let down and I have often wondered if over the years people put down the movie as they dislike the game so much.
Final Thoughts on Tomorrow Never Dies
Anyway, back to the movie, Tomorrow Never Dies is a really fun Bond movie and a movie that I feel has aged really well. It is one of those movies that if you are stuck for something to watch and just want to be entertained, it will more than get the job done. If you have not seen this movie for many years, I highly recommend that you give it a second chance. If I were to rank the Pierce Brosnan Bond movies, I would have this one second on my list, just a hair ahead of GoldenEye.
