The Film Review
The film is set around the year 2805 in an environment where humans have evacuated the Earth due to excessive garbage and have sent down WALL-E trash-collecting machines in order to clean it up. Of all the robots, only one remains functional which also manages to develop human-like senses such as a conscience.
One day, WALL-E encounters an EVE probe dropped off by a ship filled with human beings. WALL-E shows a seedling, which he collected whilst scavenging, to EVE after which she goes into standby mode before the ship comes back to collect her.
WALL-E joins EVE inside the ship and discovers a bunch of obese humans who rely on technology to such an extent that even the captain of the ship, McCrea, leaves the ship under the control of a robot autopilot called AUTO.
When EVE tries to hand over the plant seedling to McCrea, she discovers that it has been stolen and blames WALL-E for it. It turns out that AUTO stole it in the first place as he reveals his secret built-in no-return directive.
McCrea tries to deactivate AUTO meanwhile, WALL-E and EVE try to insert the seedling, so they can activate the hyperjump command which will lead them straight to earth. After an intense struggle, the duo succeeds as the ship lands on Earth. The film ends as humans and robots begin to restore the earth and its environment together.
According to Pixar, WALL-E has been their most complex project ever since the production of Monsters, Inc. Compared to Pixar’s average number of 75,000 storyboards, WALL-E required 125,000. In order to animate the Earth’s rusty design, Pixar observed the cities of Chernobyl and Sofia due TO their issues of storing garbage.
As for the spaceship, Stanton wanted to make sure that the interior of Axiom was similar to the overall look of the cities of Shanghai and Dubai. He wanted to give the impression that humans had advanced to such an age where spaceships had become portable cities. Moving on to the animation of characters, Pixar animators watched Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin films every day for almost a year. This was basically done to observe how emotions could be transmitted just through action without the use of words. These techniques and observations were applied to the robots.
WALL-E’s main soundtrack was composed by Thomas Newman and was released on 24th June 2008 by Walt Disney Records. The score earned Thomas Newman a nomination for Best Original Song at the Academy Award.
Overall, WALL-E has become one of the most successful Pixar films, grossing over $533 million. WALL-E is one of those very rare animated films which went on to win an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature along with being nominated for Best Original Screenplay, Best Original Score, Sound Editing, and Sound Mixing. WALL-E is one of those films which never gets old as the more you watch it, the more you fall in love with the story.
