The Song Review
In I’m a Mess, Bebe Rexha starts by singing about how she is an overall mess and not loved by her crush. After talking about her own imperfections, she makes it clear how it does not matter what other people might think of her as long as she loves herself as part of the following verses stating “He don’t love me, he don’t love me, but that’s okay, ‘cause I love me, yeah, I love me”.
The song in its entirety talks about a very important issue at hand, depression. In recent years, there have been cases resulting in suicidal deaths due to the sole factor of depression.
Bebe Rexha claimed that the song and the lyrics relate to her own struggle with anxiety and depression. She further explained how she began to eventually accept the flaws within herself and get used to the fact that imperfections do exist, and it is okay to not be okay all the time.
The Video
The official music video for the song was released on 19th July 2018, almost a month later after the song’s initial release. The sequence begins with Rexha sitting beside a wall, appearing as she has been crying for quite a while now by the looks of her deformed makeup.
She is then taken to a hospital which specializes in treating patients who undergo anxiety, depression, and other sorts of mental health issues.
As the main chorus forms, Rexha can be seen dancing to the tune with the rest of the performers within the boundaries of their hospital room. In a sequence which started off in a quite depressing manner as per the theme of the song, I’m a Mess ends with a colorful performance as the other performers –dressed up like patients – flash their torch lights at Rexha who beautifully gives the impression that she is finally beginning to cope with her mental struggles and beginning to accept herself for who she truly is.
