The Song Review
The song’s title, Tusa, is Colombian slang for heartache. The way Karol G processes this heartache is very different from how Nicki Minaj deals with it.
Karol G’s part, entirely in Spanish, is from the girl’s perspective, who wants to convince herself that she has moved on from her past relationship. It is suggested that the relationship was not healthy, and her ex-boyfriend took advantage of her. This is the English translation of one of the lines:
“She’s tough and he took advantage.”
The woman knows that this man is not worth her tears, but she still finds it difficult to forget about him. No matter how hard she tries, she still gets sad when she listens to the song that reminds her of him.
Lyrically and tonally, this is in sharp contrast to Nicki Minaj’s part, who is very confident that she has moved on and found someone who deeply cares for her.
“Cause it’s a new day, I’m in a new place”
This line is quite possibly a reference to Nicki Minaj’s relationship with her husband, Kenneth Petty. Minaj also raps in Spanish, which will be a lovely surprise to many of her fans.
Tusa is a song about women dealing with the aftermath of a tough breakup. Karol G’s bit captures the feeling of longing and missing someone who was once an essential part of your life, whereas Nicki Minaj’s role is that of a woman realizing her worth and moving on from a toxic partner.
Tusa – Video Interpretation
Filmed in Los Angeles and directed by Mike Ho, the music video for Tusa was released through Karol G’s YouTube Channel. The video begins with Karol G being surrounded by dancers – all of whom are women. There is not a single man in the entire video. It is a very tasteful celebration of women.
The pinkish hues give an almost dreamy look, possibly reflecting Karol G’s state of mind, as she still feels emotionally vulnerable and in love with the man who wronged her. She is also seen with a Pegasus (a mythical winged divine horse), which perhaps shows the inherent power and grace of a woman who loves deeply.
