The song refers in title to Ibiza, an island in the Mediterranean. It falls within the Balearic Islands in Spain. The pill is essentially an unidentified drug, and Mike is under the influence of it. Later, he revealed that the drug is MDMA.
In an interview published on Medium in 2015, Mike Posner talked about his inspiration behind the song.
Mike Posner said, “It was sort of a mystery pill. Moreover, I was already under the influence of alcohol at the time. I had written a track with Avicii that week in Sweden called “Stay with You”. And, he was playing in Ibiza, so I said, ‘I will just go there with you,’ because I was already in Europe. I don’t have like a regular 9–5 job … so might as well go to Ibiza, right? I had never been there before.”
Further, he talked about how a guy recognized him at the show. That guy had a bag full of pills. He says, “He holds up a little bag having pills. He goes like, ‘You want one?’ The drunk Mike Posner was like, ‘Eff it, yeah.’ Posner tells he took a pill that he never had before. He felt really good. He adds, “Then when I came down, I felt 10 years older”.
