The Review: A Charming Roman Romp
Based on the famous French comic books of the same name, Asterix & Obelix XXL 2 remains faithful to the franchise and delivers a more dynamic experience in the process. As a result, the game generates a greater sense of reward. Much of this, is due to the gameplay, which has seen significant improvements. Better still, fans have plenty of extra content to drool over, on top of a newly integrated player upgrade system, both of which are welcome inclusions.
The Premise
At its core, Asterix & Obelix XXL 2 is a hearty brawler with bags of personality which captures the magic of its predecessor well. Packed full of satirical gags and cultural references, it smacks of Goscinny’s comedic style, which does a grand job of setting the scene. A fact that will satisfy those with a soft spot for nostalgia.
The Remaster
For the most part, it’s a solid remaster, that flatters the comics of old. However, as much as the graphics are a good deal better than the original games, they still look a tad outdated. More so, when compared to the high standards of the present day. Still, the visuals hold up, and it’s clear that the game’s developers Osome Studios have incorporated new character models and textures within the games facelift.
Thankfully, the rehaul to Asterix & Obelix XXL 2 doesn’t stop there. This timeless classic now has the bonus of a traditional skills tree. Within the games, color-soaked landscapes are stores which allow players to max out each ability while progressing through the game. Furthermore, new combos and techniques are a handy tool when it comes to repelling the hordes of rotten Romans that stand between you, and the final destination.
Additionally, there are three new modes of difficulty to tackle together with a gradual increase in maximum health. Sadly, this aspect does impact upon the game’s toughness, but new challenges more than compensates for this drop in its difficulty. Plus, there is always the option to crank up the intensity to an extra notch should you feel up to it.
The World of Asterix & Obelix XXL 2
Next up, we have the world. Welcome to the devil’s playground, or rather, the Romans backyard. We all know that the Romans had a lot of spare time on their hands. Besides, lording over the planet is a tough gig. Perhaps then, it’s fitting that they should create a theme park born from sheer boredom alone, such was their power way back in 50 BC.
As it happens, Las Vegum is a richly dense world, full of grandeur. Seriously, it has all the makings of what a Roman fun-park would look like if indeed they ever built one in the first place. What stands out, is the depth of color. Further, still, rich shades and splashes of vibrant tones litter the lands which do a great job of adding a sense of warmness and wonder.
The Bottom Line
Lastly, I would be neglectful of my duties if I didn’t say just how much fun it was revisiting this game. So much of the joy comes from the simple things, like smashing out killer combo’s worthy of a high-five, or tag-teaming waves of Roman legionaries. Likewise, the mischievous nature of these two Gaulish warriors creates a subtle, comedic undertone that runs throughout. Thus, adding a certain charm that will appeal to audiences young and old.
