Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019)

Infinity Ward’s reboot of the Modern Warfare series, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019) is a great mixture of everything that makes these games work as well as a few experimental things here and there that didn’t go over so well. Given the almost annual nature of these games, players might be hard-pressed to keep plunking down their hard-earned cash each time Activision decides to gift the world with one of these games. However, you’d be remiss if you passed up on this title as it is a great reboot of an already spectacular series that does just enough to keep things fresh and welcoming.

The Game Review

One welcome addition to this game that was missing in the Black Ops title that preceded it in release is the campaign mode. This is the Call of Duty action movie narrative that is a take-it-or-leave-it thing for many gamers – hence why it was left out of the previous Black Ops game.

But for some people, this is a requirement and the campaign meets all expectations without really drawing outside of the lines in terms of its story. Fans of America-centered patriotic action movies will be right at home with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s 2019 narrative.

Graphically, we’ve got a real tour-de-force on our hands here. With visuals that look nearly photorealistic, it is hard to complain about anything in this area. Everything moves at a brisk clip and, though there are points where the world obviously breaks, it never does so during critical moments…most of the time.

Moving on to the multiplayer modes (the true showstoppers here), Modern Warfare is notable for not including a zombies mode (to the chagrin of many) yet makes up for it with Spec Ops and the battle royale Warzone. Spec Ops is the revival of a classic mode that pits players into co-op situations that require them to fulfill missions drawn from the campaign mode’s narrative.

Warzone is an amazingly deep and addictive battle royale game using the Call of Duty engine. Think of it as the normal multiplayer mode but on the next level. It is somewhat hard to pick out which mode is the best but, if forced to do so, we’d say the battle royale mode is easily the big draw here

. Spec Ops would have to be third. It is a well-executed gameplay idea but it just isn’t nearly as compelling as zombies used to be. We also like the battle royale mode because it often includes gamers at different levels and seems more accessible to new gamers. The regular multiplayer modes often feel needlessly punishing and clubby. That’s all out of the window in the battle royale.

The Bottom Line

Perhaps the toughest question gamers have to ask themselves before taking on a shooter like the iterative Call of Duty series is whether or not it will be any fun if you’re not very good at these games. Activision does a great job of keeping it inviting when the game first comes out but is somewhat powerless once everything is well and established. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019) is a game that has hung around for some time and, as such, has a huge following already.

You might find yourself alienated as a new player but, at the same time, it’s an amazingly fun game that will let you get your water wings in the campaign mode before throwing you into the deep end of multiplayer.
