Call of Duty: World at War

Launched in 2009 on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, Wii, PS2, Windows, Xbox One and even on Nintendo DS and Windows Mobile the downloadable Call of Duty: World at War had access to huge online gaming communities unlike any before on console. PCs had always prided themselves on having robust multiplayer first-person shooters, but gaming consoles never really had that level of support until Halo for the Xbox then the later Call of Duty titles, among others.

The Game Review

A series that began on the battlefields of World War II but which is now the de facto first-person shooter of choice for millions of gamers around the globe, Call of Duty not only describes a game but also a lifestyle.

Whether it is in the ultra-competitive online multiplayer modes or the more off-the-wall zombies game modes, Call of Duty has changed so much from its first appearance that it is almost hard to see the resemblance.

But, at its heart, Call of Duty is the same first-person shooter it always was – online gaming just happened to explode in popularity between then and now.

One title that helped kick off the now-annual sensation, Call of Duty: World at War, released in 2008, is where many people say “things changed” for the franchise.

Call of Duty: World at War: the Multiplayer Fun

When someone judges this game it is almost impossible to discount how important the online multiplayer was. Sure, the servers are largely dead now but, back in its heyday, World at War was the game to play. Now that the single-player campaign mode is all but a memory for most Call of Duty games, World at War stands out for being a “complete package” in an era of titles that are focused on almost purely online gameplay.

The Single-Player Experience

The single-player campaign on offer in World at War puts you through your typical Tom Clancy fare and posits a narrative that is both outlandish but gripping in its absurdity. Fans of guns and glory plotlines, as well as weaponry and armament, will be amazed at the level of detail the developers Treyarch put into the game.

The Graphics in the Game

Employing a photo-real graphics engine, this title has aged well even though it’s been some time since its debut. The stages are constructed with crisp elements and attention to detail that makes them enjoyable in online modes. The stages in the single-player are appropriate, if somewhat static, set pieces as well. Graphically, the game doesn’t look its age but isn’t challenging anything on today’s level.

The Sound

Music and sound come in at an appropriately Hollywood-epic level.

The Bottom Line: Is Call of Duty: World at War Worth Your Money?

One of the things that many people note about Call of Duty, like it or not, is that the games are created with a high level of quality in mind. And, where it really matters, this gem truly shines. The controls are on point and the gameplay is tough to beat, whether it is zombies, single-player campaign, or online combat.  We recommend that you download this title and check out what a great experience it offers.
