The downloadable title Gears of War 4, arriving in 2016 from devs The Coalition and published by Microsoft Studios, is the first title in the Gears series to not come from Epic Games – and that had many people worried, at least at first. Those worries were unfounded as the title not only brings back a lot of the series’ classic gameplay features but also stays true to its focus on delivering compelling single-player, multiplayer, and cooperative experiences.

The Game Review
Dropping in 2006, Gears of War was the Xbox 360’s gritty shooter saga that helped drive home the kind of audience that Microsoft wanted to bring in for their second console. Huge, epic, and offering some of the best action around, Gears of War has continued to spawn legions of new fans with every installment.
GoW 4, taking place some 25 years after the conclusion of Gears of War 3, sees many of the traditional menaces of humanity eliminated but a world falling apart in the process.
Though the old foes were largely vanquished, the planet has become inhospitable to the human population. Huge windstorms plague much of its surface and wind speed plays a huge role in the game. This can impact everything from weapons to movement.
The plot largely revolves around conflicts within human society as well as against a renewed enemy force. Presented in the game’s trademark style that mixes grit and Hollywood epic, this is a worthy though inconclusive installment in the franchise.
In terms of graphics, this is an amazingly detailed and well-crafted set of worlds and characters but it is not overly realistic. Character proportions are unnatural and movement can be a little over the top, but this isn’t a game that is striving for realistic depictions of action or people.
Accompanying this presentation are amazing scores and sound effects that help bring the world to life. Ringing with an intensity that is rarely seen in a console game, Gears of War 4 is every bit the epic game in the sound department. In fact, many reviewers went so far as to compare the game to Disney’s The Force Awakens and other massive Hollywood epics.
Known for its masterful combination of storytelling and intense action gameplay, Gears of War 4 represents a return to form in many respects. But it is also a breath of fresh air for the series. Receiving nearly perfect scores from most outlets upon release, the game is proof positive that older IP need not become bogged down in its history.
Gears of War is particularly strong when it comes to cooperative gameplay. Experienced with a friend, the story on offer here is suitably epic and intense. Of course, Gears also has online multiplayer modes like other games, but it is its cooperative element that really makes Gears unique as a series. Gears of War 4’s mastery of this element helps solidify its position as one of the premier games of the current generation of Microsoft games and consoles.
