The Game Review

Hollow Knight is a single player game which takes place in the fantasy place of Hallownest. Our main controllable protagonist is a nameless knight who is eager to unlock the treasures that lurk within the abandoned insect kingdom. The game has quite a background story when it comes to explaining how the kingdom itself became abandoned and cursed by the insects.

One of the more creative features of this game is how it has multiple endings depending upon the player’s actions. The ending leads the player to fight against the Hollow Knight and it is only at that point where the ending is altered.

One ending has the player’s character absorb the remains of Hollow Knight after defeating it, thereby transforming into one himself. A second ending consists of the Hornet being sealed after the end of the battle whereas the third one enables the player to take over the Hollow Knight’s mind by using the Void Heart.

As far as the in-game mechanics are concerned, Hollow Knight features a 2D environment where the main protagonist carries a cone-like sword that is mainly used during most of the combat. Secondary combat systems also allow players to use long-ranged attacks in the form of spells.

Every time the player attacks an enemy creature, the protagonist gains an entity known as Soul which is stored in a Soul Vessel. These souls can be used to cast numerous spells that can eventually be unlocked as the game progresses.

There are two types of enemies presented in the game in terms of difficulty level. There are regular insects and creatures that are relatively easy to defeat by simply attacking them using the sword or a basic spell.

Then there are boss enemies which are far more challenging and require a strategy to defeat. However, Hollow Knight offers the incentive to players of having to skip some of the boss levels and proceed further in the storyline without having to defeat them. This condition only applies to some, but not all boss enemies.

Hollow Knight Review Summary

Overall, Hollow Knight can be rated as one of those games that are known for its gameplay rather than its graphics. The intense gameplay and dynamics make up for the animation graphics used within the game. Additionally, the combat system featured is quite unique due to its variety of offense styles that can be implemented throughout the game.

  • Unique combat system featuring both ranged and melee attacks.
  • A well-defined storyline that connects different areas to each other.
  • Graphics are relatively simple and not very detailed.
