Mortal Kombat X

Mortal Kombat X is the 10th main installment in the Mortal Kombat franchise but is the 2nd installment to the series after the franchises’ reboot with Mortal Kombat (9) back in 2011. Mortal Kombat X was developed by NetherRealm Studios, the same team behind Mortal Kombat (9) and Injustice 1 and 2, another great pair of fighting games. With Mortal Kombat X, the developers once again stepped up to the plate to ensure that they could create the most graphic and violent fighting game out there!

The Game Review

Mortal Kombat X follows on from the events of Mortal Kombat (9) after the defeat of Shao Kahn. Shinnok resumes his assault on Earthrealm, defended by heroes such as Raiden and Johnny Cage. Defeating Shinnok didn’t seem quite as easy as they anticipated, and things quickly heat up. As the story develops, new and old characters show up, they swap sides occasionally, and all of the realms have their own little side stories that eventually tie up into the main story revolving around the protection of Earthrealm.

Just like with any fighting game, the general idea is to defeat your opponent with whatever tools you have been given, with each character having their own vast array of different special moves. A returning feature from Injustice is the advent of environmental elements that can be activated at the press of a button. By pressing a prompt when near one of them, your character will proceed to either do something damaging or acrobatic. For instance, one character might bounce off of a shield, whereas another character might pick it up and sling it towards their opponent. Just like with all of the previous Mortal Kombat games, the Fatality feature has been brought back where you can brutally dismember your opponent once you’ve defeated them, providing you can hit the buttons in the correct order.

A new feature to Mortal Kombat X is the decision to split each character into 3 different “classes” or styles. When you select a character, before you can play with them, you must pick one of their 3 different styles, with each style focusing on a certain specialty. Depending on the style chosen, that character will have different moves in comparison to its other styles, meaning that each character can be played in 3 different ways, allowing for a wide variety of gameplay as this is a feature for each and every single character.

Easily the biggest comparison for these games is the developers’ other title, Injustice, where it took some of the same mechanics from it and repurposed them for Mortal Kombat X. They also made sure to use many of the previous Mortal Kombat games as an influence to pick up on the games nuances and bring them into the newer, rebooted version of the popular fighting game.

For any fans of Mortal Kombat or fighting games in general, Mortal Kombat X provides more than enough for the average fighting game fan to enjoy. Not only is the story a great addition – something not many fighting games have – the option to also have 3 different variations on the same character is a new and unique change that makes playing your favorite character fun and unique every time.
