Every now and again I am given the chance to play a game that I knew nothing about, but then I am blown away by what I play. SENRAN KAGURA Burst Re:Newal is a downloadable game that I had no expectations of, but ended up sinking many, many hours into.

The Game Review
This is actually a remake of a rather early Nintendo 3DS game. SENRAN KAGURA Burst Re:Newal is part of a franchise and while this is the most recent game it is actually one of the early games in terms of its story, as a result, it features far more story than many of its predecessors.
The story of this game is way better than I thought it would be. It basically is about a group of young ladies who are dealing with the everyday happenings at their high school. Oh, but these young ladies also happen to be ninjas in training! I know it sounds very shallow (especially when you look at the art style) but each character is given their own time to shine.
The writing is actually very good and the game does a fantastic job of explaining why each character is the way they are. For an action game (with a very over-sexualized style) SENRAN KAGURA Burst Re:Newal has far more heart than you would think.
Now let’s talk about the gameplay. It is the gameplay of SENRAN KAGURA Burst Re:Newal that really won me over. This is a hack-and-slash action style game and I would compare it to games like Dynasty Warriors and especially Lollipop Chainsaw given the game’s art style. This hack and slash-style gameplay is not for everyone though and to an extent, I can see how some folks can find it shallow.
The main story of the game that you play through, of which there are two. Will see you run to an area, clear out a bunch of enemies, run to a new area, and then on occasion take on a boss in a one-on-one fight. The boss battles tend to be girls from the rival school, but you do get to experience the story from both perspectives.
The combat is super fast-paced and is very combo heavy. While you could just smash one button over and over again. It is mixing your light, heavy, air and special attacks together that let you dish out major damage and also let you have major fun.
Now let’s get to what your eyes were first drawn to in regards to SENRAN KAGURA Burst Re:Newal. We are talking about giant anime boobs. It is so easy to pass the game of as nothing more than a game for dudes wanting to check out hot anime girls, but that is doing the game a huge disservice.
Still at the same time when the game has special moves that literally let you rip your clothes off it is hard to ignore that the game has a lot of sex appeal.
In terms of the special ability where they rip their clothes off, the game will make you super strong, but as you have next to no clothes on you take more damage. The game has a ton of costumes for you to deck the girls out with and there is a very addictive progression system in the game as well.
The PC version has something that the PS4 version does not and that is Intimacy Mode. This mode lets you look at the character models and grab their boobs! It is done in a very tame and tongue in cheek way and those who were up in arms about this probably never played it and at the end of the day the game is rated M.
I do not think that the sexuality and partial nudity that is on display here is any worse than a game like Bayonetta or Lollipop Chainsaw.
