The Story and Mechanics of the Game
The storyline and the world of Subnautica are strongly linked to classic adventure books such as the famous Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne. The action takes place in a futuristic ocean full of dangerous creatures, while the player assumes the role of a survivor from a sinking modern submarine. The goal of the game, as it is with most survival games, is survival and explorations.
The mechanics of the game are based on the principles familiar to the fans of the genre. In Subnautica you can expect to find a mix of open-world RPGs, action games, and simulators. Your adventure begins in a rescue capsule that has been dropped from a mother ship which has crashed on the high seas. The game forces you to upgrade your unit and avoid threats. Most of the game is, of course, played underwater. The only haven and a piece of dry land will be your ships.
Subnautica: How to Play
By building and upgrading your underwater capsule you can freely choose details such as interior design and layout of rooms. You can also decide on the onboard equipment to be placed within the confines of your flagship unit. The way you design you sub will have an impact on how it will behave in the water.
At the beginning of your adventure, you will have the opportunity to build only primitive small units. However, as your experience grows, the size and technological sophistication of your submarines will also grow accordingly. The improvements in your base will allow you to move away from the safe capsule. This will let you also acquire rare and valuable minerals.
During the game, you will take care of the basic needs of your character. The key to it will be to search for drinking water and food. In addition, you will be able to collect minerals and other resources. Last, but not least, during your underwater journey you will face many dangers.
The engine on which Subnautica runs is Unity known from the modern AAA productions. The underwater world is thus beautifully executed, and the graphic design borders on photorealistic. The physics and the movement of objects in the water are also designed with precision. The oceanic fauna and flora deserve a separate praise. The game will let you discover and explore the beautiful coral reefs and underwater caves. The world of Subnautica is filled with content to the brim, while the game has been pretty well optimized. It’s also worth to notice that Subnautica received support for virtual reality helmets.
If you like the underwater realms and are at the same time a keen survivalist, you should also take a look at other titles with the nautical theme: Stranded Deep and Raft.
