The original Subnautica game kind of came out of nowhere. It was a fantastic survival game where it felt that there was this doom closing on you the whole time you played it. Well, the team is back for a full-on sequel Subnautica: Below Zero.

The Game Review
Subnautica: Below Zero is set on a really cool alien planet called, 4546B. You are a scientist that is on a research mission and this research mission happens to be taking place in one of the most remote and strange places on the planet.
You are here to find and study these ancient alien artifacts. You do this to learn more about the aliens that were on this world before you. You have a space station (The Vesper) that is above the planet and these are basically your commanding officers who will look after you, send you supplies and be there ready for anything that you can send me. Are these people really your friends? That is for you to discover.
Which leads me to something that I feel you will either love or hate and that is the story. I actually liked the narrative that the game has so far. I do know that some people are not as keen on how you do not feel as alone as you did in the first game, but I am really liking what I have seen so far. The game is still in early access so it is very possible that some big changes could be coming to the game.
You are going about your business, conducting your research when an “incident” happens and your research mission turns into a survival mission! I thought this was handled really well and you will have to go and make yourself a shelter, find food, make items and do whatever you can to survive. However, you never lose sight of your mission and you keep looking for alien artifacts to find out more about those who came before you.
The world of Subnautica: Below Zero is truly breathtaking. While it may be the underwater elements and wildlife that is getting all the attention. You can also explore on land where you will scale icy peaks and look inside deep dark caves. The different biomes that the game has are amazing and it makes you wonder what life on this planet years ago would have been like.
Speaking of life, the different creatures that you encounter are fantastic. You never know at first if they will be friendly or if you are going to have to run or swim for your life. You can go from studying something at a distant to then being chased by it and all because you thought it looked like of cute and would be friendly.
Subnautica: Below Zero is still in very early access so please keep that in mind. The developers are very upfront with the bugs and issues that the game has and it still needs a fair bit of polish to the presentation. However, there are a lot of positives here and I think the world of 4546B is truly fascinating and a place I cannot wait to explore more of.
