The reboot of Wolfenstein has been a huge success, but Wolfenstein: The Old Blood (2015) often gets ignored. This was a standalone release that is a prequel to the events of The New Order. It was released at a more “modest” price and as a result, may be short on content, but it is big on fun.
The game is set during the 1940s and once again we play the role of BJ. Now, you are fighting to try and stop the alternate history that is in The New Order from taking place. It is a much more straightforward and action-packed kind of adventure, lacking in the character development that The New Order and its sequels would become known for.
This though does not mean Wolfenstein: The Old Blood is the black sheep of this new Wolfenstein family! Instead, we get a shorter, but a more balls-to-the-wall kind of action shooter that never lets up. You go from one location to the next, blowing away enemies, you very rarely are encouraged to run away or spare anyone!

The Game Review
Action is the name of the game here and when you get into a firefight the arenas are the star of the show. I say this because not only is there a nice variety to the locations, each one has many levels, hidden areas, and so on for you to fight in. It makes getting into a firefight with a bunch of enemies so much more fun when you can use the area to your advantage.
The only time the action takes a break is in the form of the handful of stealth sections that the game has. The most notable of these stealth sections is when you have to stop this mech from being powered up. You also need to take out security guards in some areas too. It is a nice change of pace, but it can on occasion be frustrating.
Wolfenstein: The Old Blood has a fairly solid checkpoint system in place. However, you want to take your time in the stealth sections so a lot of time can pass, but if you die, you have to repeat the whole section which can be annoying. I feel more frequent checkpoints during these sections would have been better.
The range of guns is pretty stacked, but there is nothing here that is going to blow you away. Like the rest of this franchise, the gunplay is very satisfying. It is so hard to describe in words, but as soon as you take down your first wave of enemies you will know exactly what I am talking about.
The game is rather short, you are probably looking at 6 to 8 hours to get through it. There is a part in the game where you have that “switch” that goes from fighting Nazis to fighting Nazi zombies. This is a lot of fun and things become even more frantic when this takes place. Even though the zombies are not as smart as the regular Nazis.
Overall, if you have gotten into this reboot of the franchise, Wolfenstein: The Old Blood is not going to let you down. The action-heavy first-person shooter action is fantastic and while you know the outcome of the story. I did find it to be a wild ride when it lasted, be sure to give this one a try!
