Lagoon Lounge: The Poisonous Fountain

Lagoon Lounge: The Poisonous Fountain is a visual novel featuring homosexual themes and a nod to the furry community from KAIJYU-09. This is a game filled with nice graphics and a solid narrative where choices matter and replay value is high. While an indie game in the visual novel genre, Lagoon Lounge: The Poisonous Fountain, also known as Himitsuri no Lagoon in Japanese, is chock full of adult themes and nudity. Younger players should probably steer clear of this game.

The Game Review

As a furry who has quit his job due to overwork, you journey with a friend to a seaside village to recover but not everything is as it seems. In a bit of Twin Peaks, Lagoon Lounge: The Poisonous Fountain’s town is experiencing strange events from small earthquakes and other phenomena which, curiously, are attracting boatloads of tourists to the town. To make some extra money your character decides to work as a waiter in a local restaurant and it is from there that you get involved in all manner of intrigues and love triangles.

Shortly after settling into your new routine, you are warned about the fountain in the middle of town, the so-called poisonous fountain from the game’s title. While the game comes in a number of foreign languages the English translation could use some work as it is riddled with typos and the occasional awkward phrasing. While normally acceptable in a game, given that Lagoon Lounge: The Poisonous Fountain is a remake of an older title by the same name, you would think that these translation errors would have been corrected in the remade version but sadly they are not.

Also, the changes between the original and the remake are quite few and far between, being relegated mainly to graphics and sound upgrades with one infamous scene not making the final cut. Those gripes aside, there really is a lot of polish and quality work in this game, especially in some of the more nuanced translations. You’ll never be at a loss for what’s happening or what to do next and the game does an excellent job of keeping the player engaged, even offering a bevy of possible pathways to take, making the game replayable and dynamic each time. The game strongly features themes of male relationships cast in the guise of the furry subculture making it a unique visual novel among English language offerings.

The sex scenes are censored without the use of a mod so the game isn’t graphic or explicit in terms of depicting gay sex. The whole experience can be finished in about five hours but, since there are multiple playthroughs, gamers looking for a different scenario need only start back from the chapter they’d like to change and play forward – a true advantage of having finished the game already. Fans of visual novels and the romance genre, in particular, will probably really enjoy Lagoon Lounge: The Poisonous Fountain because it is a solid romance title with unique furry-themed characters.
