The Quarry

The Quarry is the next title in Supermassive Games’ long arsenal, along with the likes of Man of Medan, Until Dawn, House of Ashes, and Little Hope. Developed by Supermassive Games and published by 2K Games, The Quarry was released on the 10th of June 2022. With The Quarry, it’s another one of their games where every single choice that you make matters in the grand scheme of things and can mean the difference between one character living and another dying.

The Game Review

Gameplay

Unsurprisingly, with The Quarry being a primarily story-focused game, the story is the main appeal of the game. Half of the fun is seeing what consequences your actions provide as you play through the game. They could be completely inconsequential and mean nothing or you can end up leading to the loss of one of several characters that you’re in control of. In this game, your choices really do matter from beginning to end.

How you make these choices can vary depending on what the game wants you to do. At times it will straight up give you a multiple choice question for you to decide on, or there will be a series of quick-time events, or you can simply explore with your current character.

When it comes to the actual gameplay mechanics, the game isn’t very interesting to play, as most of the time it’s just exploring, doing some QTEs, and occasionally making a decision. The fun isn’t with how the game is played, but more with how the story plays out with the decisions, you end up making.

As already stated, literally every decision that is made in the game can ultimately affect something later on down the line. It could be something as insignificant as a bit of extra dialogue or it could result in someone or everyone dying.

The only way you’ll ever know how is by playing through the game multiple times and seeing if making a different choice the second time around makes a big enough difference. Thanks to the game having so much variety with the endings and actions you can take, repeat playthroughs are encouraged to see everything the game has to offer to the player.

Graphics

In terms of any visual differences between The Quarry and their other games, like Until Dawn or Man of Medan, there isn’t really much to talk about as their graphics are pretty similar in almost every single way.

For anyone that’s played either of those games, you’ll know just how good the games can look on high-fidelity PCs. By using state-of-the-art motion capture, the characters in the game resemble their actors exceptionally well and it just goes to show how much love, care, and attention goes into the visual aspect of this one.

Audio

As with any good horror title, you need competent audio. The audio needs to be creepy, and terrifying, and it needs to be able to build that unsettling atmosphere to keep the player on the edge of their seat at all times.

Thankfully, Supermassive Games seem to know what they’re doing in this department, as once again they’ve knocked it out of the park with the audio. The music is appropriate; the creepy sounds always help to unsettle you, and the silences when needed fit the appropriately building atmosphere so well that it easily becomes one of the game’s best features.

Conclusion

Overall, The Quarry is another fun addition from the developers over at Supermassive Games. At times it can be a little bit cheesy, but it honestly fits the game’s style so it’s easy to embrace. As it currently stands, the game could do with some more optimization to fix up some of the bugs that are in the current build.

All in all, though, if you’re looking for a fun and interesting story-based horror game that doesn’t take itself too seriously and oozes ’80’s and ’90s horror movie charm, The Quarry is definitely worth a recommendation.
