The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan

For fans of horror games, The Dark Pictures Anthology Man of Medan is one of the most anticipated games of 2019. From the creators of the awesome Until Dawn. What we have here is a more serious kind of horror game. A game where the choices you make can literally be the difference between life and death!

The Game Review

The story of the game is rather interesting. A group of five buddies decides to take a vacation where they can have fun diving. Soon, thanks to them ending up stranded on a ghost ship from World War II. They find themselves in a fight for survival against these “strange” humans and even themselves.

It is impossible to play The Dark Pictures Anthology Man of Medan and not compare it to Until Dawn. The biggest difference for me is the overall tone of the game. This is a game that is playing the story very straight. There is none of the humor that Until Dawn has and to be honest, I get what they were going for, but I do feel that maybe just a little more “lightheartedness” would have made me care about the characters more.

The gameplay sees you takin control of the characters and exploring the ghost ship. The majority of the game takes place on here and it is a rather unnerving kind of place. You have plenty of choices to make, picking up a knife, trying to escape on a speedboat and going back to help a friend are just a few examples of choices that will shape the story.

While The Dark Pictures Anthology Man of Medan only takes around five hours to play through. There is so much variety to the choices you can make and different ways characters can survive or die. You will probably want to play through the game multiple times to experience it all. Especially to see all those brutal and gruesome death scenes!

One thing that is a whole lot of fun is the multiplayer! I never thought multiplayer would work in a game like this but it does and does so very well. It is online-only, but you and a friend each take control of one of the characters. You can work together to survive the horror…. Or you can screw over your friend which can be hilarious.

I would advise playing the game by yourself for the first playthrough. However, do not sleep on the multiplayer as it is a very fun experience. I actually played two playthroughs on my own before jumping into the multiplayer and found that worked out perfectly for me.

The presentation is great. While the overall setting of the game may lack the variety of the locations in Until Dawn. I do like this ghost ship and found myself wanting to explore, well when I was not fighting for my life of course. There are some great performances here too with Hollywood actors such as Shawn Ashmore really standing out.

Overall, I have had a lot of fun with The Dark Pictures Anthology Man of Medan. I like the setting, characters and especially how the choices you make have real consequences. I do wish it did not take itself so seriously, but this is still a fantastic time if you are a fan of horror games.
