The Game Review
When talking about a game like Layers of Fear 2 it is really important not to spoil it for people who have not experienced it yet. The basics of the story are that you playing as an actor (as well we experiencing some other characters) are on a strange ship at the request of a director looking to shoot his masterpiece. His masterpiece has more in common with Silent Hill than Dancing in the Rain!
Unfortunately for everyone on board this ship, the director is bat poop crazy! The things he says makes you think he is insane one minute, but then the next you think he might be some kind of genius. The director is one of the most interesting characters I have come across in quite some time in a game.
Actually, it is not just the director, but the main actor and also the other characters as well. The writing and voice acting are some of the best I have come across in many years. It really is superb and it works on so many levels. One minute you are at ease the next you are wishing you had a clean pair of underpants beside you.
Few games mess with you like Layers of Fear 2 does. You can be walking along and then all of a sudden when you turn around what was once a door is now a corridor! Do not even get me started on how this ship, you can go to locations like a skyscraper. It is very weird, sounds odd, but it really could not have been put together any better than it is.
It feels like the ship is always changing, what was once a pristine area can be run down and horrible next time you see it. Layers of Fear 2 really does mess with your mind. There were many times I found myself asking, “was that there before?”, “was that like that before?” and so on.
The game is so, so creepy. One of the highlights for me is when you are being chased by this “creature” you do not really know what the heck it is, but you do know you die if it gets to close! You have to run, slamming doors behind you as you go and praying that it does not find you. It is very tense stuff and kind of reminds me of that game, Outlast actually.
There are also these mannequins (which fit the movie tone of the game) that move and you know they are going to move. However, it does not matter as it still scares the heck out of you! Even the puzzles that the game throws your way such as making new paths to avoid the monster, messing with a clock and taking care of a plants shadow are well thought out and fun.
Layers of Fear 2 does have multiple endings for you to experience, but this could be me being dumb as I only managed one. I could not figure out how to trigger different endings! The game does have a new game plus mode, but you cannot just play the fifth and final chapter and get to see a different ending.
The less you know about Layers of Fear 2 the better. I suggest you go into this as blind as possible. By all means, watch a trailer, but stay away from spoiler filled YouTube lets plays! If you love games that scare you, you will struggle to find one better than Layers of Fear 2.
