As the first special edition was so well received, Monkey Island 2 Special Edition: LeChuck’s Revenge would be released around a year later. While this one did not exactly blow the sales charts away when it was originally released. Many people do feel (myself included) that this is actually a better game than the one that came before it.

The Game Review
The story of the game is better than the first which is saying something as I loved the first Monkey Island game. Once again Guybrush Threepwood is trying to be the greatest pirate in the Caribbean. Complicating Guybrush’s goal is that ghostly pirate LeChuck who is now a zombie pirate and Guybrush must find a way to stop this guy permanently!
Once again, the writing is fantastic and each character that you talk to or even each item you interact with has something amusing to tell you. It is the kind of story that is so odd and weird that it keeps you playing. You want to keep playing just to see what the heck is going to happen next!
The gameplay has not really changed much from the first game. It is still a damn fine point and click adventure game. One thing that they have added though is that you can play the game in that point and click style or you can take direct control of Guybrush with the controller, I like the idea of this, but it feels a bit strange.
Solving puzzles is great as it really requires you to think outside of the box. The hint system from the first game returns, but they took away the lite mode that was in the original. If you completed this back in the day, then you already know exactly what you have to do as they have not changed anything.
As the first special edition, Monkey Island 2 Special Edition: LeChuck’s Revenge has seen the artwork get a ton of work done to it. The game looks fantastic and you can switch between the new and the old graphics. The sound has also been greatly improved with much more voice acting and it is also way high-quality.
They did also add in a few other extras. These include a hilarious commentary track which is well worth listening to. There is also a concept art viewer which I found to be fun and interesting. It is a very solid package and one that they clearly put a great deal of time into. It offers just that little bit more than the first special edition did.
I had a tremendous time playing this again. I played it once, then straight away again with the commentary track. Monkey Island 2 Special Edition: LeChuck’s Revenge is a fantastic point and click adventure game. I will say that to get the best out of this, play the first game before you jump in here. Steam actually has all three games in a bundle that saves you a few bucks.
