I have had the pleasure of playing many games that are just as much an experience as they are an actual game and What Remains of Edith Finch is one of them. What Remains of Edith Finch is a downloadable first-person discovery type game that will make you laugh, cry and feel every emotion in between.

The Game Review
The idea of the game is that you play as a character who is on their way to an island which is where the home of the Finch’s is located. You have the diary of a young girl called Edith Finch and as you read it you learn more about her and a supposed curse that the Finch family had. It is fantastic stuff and not only does it set the tone for the game, it gets you invested right off the bat.
The curse that this family has is very interesting, basically, only one child can be alive at any one time and if there is more than one, it is only a matter of time before they have a “strange” death. When you walk into the Finch house for the first time you cannot help, but be taken back by it. The developers did a wonderful job and the house feels like it has really been lived in.
The idea of the game is that you need to find your way into each room of the house. You do this and you will trigger a “memory” where you can learn more about that member of the Finch family and ultimately how they came to their end. I know that it sounds super depressing and some of the memories are pretty heartbreaking.
Still, some of the memories even though they end in death, will leave you with a smile on your face at how that particular family member lived their life to the fullest. I genuinely loved finding out about each family member and no two were the same, I was always excited to see who I would be finding out about next and what their life was life.
There is not a ton of challenge here and the hardest thing you have to do is find your way into each room. This is never going to cause you too much trouble. I do not mean this as a knock on the game as that is not the point of it. The whole point is to figure out the story of the Finch family and if there really was a curse.
You are looking at about two hours or so to get through the game. Maybe a little bit more if you decide to really explore the house. Which I recommend you do as there are lots of little things that let you know this was a real house and people actually lived here. The house is very cleverly designed and I applaud the developers for what they did here.
My only gripe with the game is that it can sometimes stutter which can take you out of the moment. I have heard that it is like this no matter which version you play. It does not happen very often, but when you are as invested in the game as What Remains of Edith Finch makes you, it can be annoying.
