Asphalt 9: Legends

Asphalt 9: Legends is another release in the acclaimed Asphalt series, a mobile racing game that is available on both iOS and Android devices. The game was originally released on the 25th July 2018 and has been in development with Gameloft, the same team behind all of the previous Asphalt titles, for example, Asphalt 8: Airborne. With the game being an F2P title, Asphalt 9: Legends is designed to be the culmination of everything good the previous games set precedence for and rolled them all into one game.

The Game Review

Just like all of the previous Asphalt games, there isn’t actually a story of any kind. Asphalt games have always been about improving as a player, getting rewards, and then putting those rewards to good use to improve their overall assortment of vehicles. With Asphalt 9: Legends, that idea hasn’t changed in the slightest, and once again the game completely lacks any kind of a story whatsoever.

The general gist of the game is that of an arcade racer, where the end goal is to always get to the end of the track in one piece and in the first place if at all possible. Races can be done both online and offline, depending on the player’s preferences when it comes to playing. For the controls, players have one of two options that they can choose from: either touchscreen controls, like a virtual joypad/joystick or the player, can tilt their device, as if it was a real steering wheel. Neither set of controls gives the player any type of advantage, it all depends on personal preference and how they prefer to play their racing games, especially on mobile. During these races, there are two buttons on the screen that the player can activate whenever they desire, and that’s a brake and a boost button. Although, the boost button does require the player to drive well during the race, giving them the chance to fill up the boost meter and activate that boost.

Outside of the core gameplay loop, players will be earning money, collecting cards/blueprints for new vehicles, gaining parts for their vehicles, and upgrading certain parts of the vehicle. With the card system, a player is required to collect a certain number of cards before they can unlock a certain vehicle, and these can typically be won from races. Any money earned can be spent on buying new cars or making upgrades to existing ones to improve their overall rating. Once a part has been upgraded to its fullest level, the player will have to find an “import part”, which can only be found in certain races as a reward. Once they get those parts, they can install them into their vehicle and proceed to upgrade them in that area some more.

Aesthetically speaking, the Asphalt series has always been known for its stunning graphics on mobile devices and with Asphalt 9 it is absolutely no different. Just like the last game, everything in the game is designed to look incredible on any mobile device and can rival most modern-day racers at this point.

For fans of the previous Asphalt games or wanted a decent racing game to pick, then Asphalt 9: Legends is as good a place as any. After all this time, Gameloft have only managed to improve on everything that the previous games had and made them that much more enjoyable as a whole for the player.
