The Game Review
There is no story or any end goal with Riff Racer – Race Your Music. This is a game that is just about being as fast as you can and more importantly, getting the highest score possible. The controls are most certainly very “arcadey” in their nature and that I feel is a huge reason as to why this is a game you can just keep on playing and playing.
What makes Riff Racer – Race Your Music such an interesting racing game is that it is all about the music. The game does have some tracks for you to select from, but the real appeal is being able to race along with any music that is on your PC. You select a track, the song and then if someone else has raced against that song, you try to beat their high score.
If you are lucky enough to be the first person ever to pick a certain song, then your name will live here forever! I have not yet had that happen to me! As you are racing you need to stay in sync with the song, there is a bar that moves along as you race and keeping in sync will give you a higher score.
Drifting, jumping and doing spins are also things that will help your overall score. I would say that drifting is the most importing thing you can do as you can link drifts together to get a bonus which is really cool. The controls feel nice and tight and they are quite forgiving. For example, if you slam into the side, you can usually find a turbo boost that will get you back in sync.
There are plenty of cars and customization options that you can unlock as you play and some of these look great. However, I have not found any difference in the way that the cars handle so I am pretty sure the different things you can unlock are just cosmetic. In all honesty, that is not the worst thing ever, but a wee bit of variety would have been nice.
The visuals of Riff Racer – Race Your Music are something that I really like. I get a very Rez or Beat Sabre kind of feel from this game and I do think that the game looks amazing. It is one of those games that is also a lot of fun to watch your friends play as you guys take turns trying to get high scores.
I had a lot of fun with Riff Racer – Race Your Music. There is not a ton of depth here I must admit. However, I have found myself spending a lot of time with this game. It is a game you can always go back to. Just make sure you have plenty of music on your computer! For me, music like Daft Punk (especially the Tron soundtrack) fits the style of this game perfectly.
