Elden Ring

Elden Ring is the latest game from the geniuses at FromSoftware. This is sure to feature on many games of the year lists and some people are already calling it one of the greatest video games of all time. If you like the other FromSoftware games then you will love this, it is that simple.

The Game Review

However, the marketing for this game was a tad on the misleading side in my opinion. Many people got on board with this due to the hype and the feeling that it was more accessible than the Souls games. That is not the case here at all! This is every bit as challenging (perhaps even more so) than the games that came before it.

The fantasy setting of Elden Ring is the best in a FromSoftware game to date. The fantasy land of The Lands Between is an awesome place that is ruled by a series of demigods that each have a shard of the Elden Ring. This has thrown things into chaos and we play as the adventurer trying to put the pieces of the ring back together.

I know that the game is still fresh in my mind and I am still high on it, but this is one of if not the greatest fantasy worlds I have ever explored. From giant castles, hidden churches, poison swaps, epic forests, and every other fantasy trope in between! This game truly is breathtaking in its world design.

It is so large that it can be so exciting, but also quite daunting at times to look out and be able to see for miles and have the freedom to go wherever you want. Exploring this large world is made more manageable thanks to our trusty steed, Torrent. Torrent is so useful in this game!

Thanks to Torrent you can easily get away from an enemy that you have no business fighting when you are at a lower level. There are some attacks that feel like they lock onto you when you are near a dungeon or someplace like that. However, for the most part, Torrent makes getting around and away from things as simple as it could be in a game like this.

There is just so much to do in this game it is kind of hard to talk about it all. Setting out with the intent to do one thing will 9/10 lead you to somewhere else where you may find a new dungeon with a giant boss or some kind of new gear you can use. The aspect of the game that I loved the most was the legacy dungeons.

These are much larger and more dangerous areas in the game that are usually home to an epic boss. The rewards in the legacy dungeons are massive, but so is the challenge! The combat system in Elden Ring will feel very familiar to Souls veterans. It is all about taking your time and knowing when to strike.

It is a system that those of us who love these games adore as it is all about skill. However, it is still very challenging here and some of the later boss fights can go on just a tad too long in my opinion. You are pretty much free to tackle things in any way that you want in Elden Ring.

Exploration and discovery in this game really are quite amazing. Most dungeons and other such areas will have multiple ways that you can get into them and then many ways you can go about exploring them once you are inside. This is a game that really does reward players who have a more adventurous side and are willing to do some deep exploration.
