The Game Review

The story for Octopath Traveler is split up into eight distinct tales (or paths), one for each available character in the game. At the start of the game, the player is expected to pick one character to embark on their story with, but as time goes by they will encounter the other seven characters and can potentially recruit them into their party. Each of these characters has their own story and at any point during the playthrough, the player can opt out of a story for a little while and investigate someone else’s instead. By the end of the game, the player can accomplish and experience all eight of the stories, without ever having to reset the game at any point.

With Octopath Traveler, the player will be doing one of two things in the game: exploring the world and fighting enemies. While exploring the world, players can make purchases, talk to NPC’s, accept quests, and even do one of several different actions depending on the character and what they’re interacting with. For instance, if they’re playing the thief, they can attempt to steal some money from NPC’s. Every other character in the game has their own special skill, and their own uses to make the game easier in some areas.

Just like with many other turn-based JRPG’s, Octopath Traveler uses many of the same tropes, such as a myriad of different classes, each with their own unique attacks and skills to bring to the battlefield. Outside the usual tropes, however, there are a few new additions that the developers have brought in through the break and weakness system. Starting off with breaks, whenever a character takes too much damage, they can experience a break and with this break, they will receive a massive bonus in damage whenever attacked. When it comes to the weaknesses, each enemy in the game has a weakness to certain types of attacks. Players have to take it upon themselves to learn what the enemy’s weaknesses are, and once they have, they can use that to their advantage and deal a significant amount of damage, without needing to break.

In terms of comparisons, the game takes inspiration from classic JRPGs, such as Final Fantasy, and even uses some similar mechanics from games like Persona, such as the weakness system. Octopath Traveler uses a lot of systems from classic JRPG’s and that’s clear from the onset.su

For any fans of JRPG’s, Octopath Traveler is an ideal game for the Nintendo Switch that offers a lot of variety and classic JRPG action that has been updated for the modern day.
