Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines

Whet it was announced that there was going to be a sequel to Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines I was a little shocked. Mainly because that game as I write this is 15 years old! Which is a heck of a long time in between games, especially when you are making an actual sequel and not just rebooting it. Anyway, the game has become really popular on Steam so what better time to take a look back at it than now!

The Game Review

The story of Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines is fantastic and one that is way more in-depth than you would think. You play as a newly created vampire who is granted the gift of life, but at a cost. You must do the dirty work of Prince Lacroix and this leads you into an adventure of self-discovery, betrayal, heroics and everything in between.

Even all these years later the story is very impressive. It has plenty of twists and turns and there are many different vampire factions in the game that you can deal with. The decisions you make do feel like they matter and you can ultimately make a decision of where you stand and what side you are on.

Back when this game first came out one of the things that really captured people’s attention was the setting. Rather than being set in old and gothic time. Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines is actually set in modern day LA. This is really cool and the way the “darker” side of the city shows its teeth when the sun goes down is actually pretty awesome.

At its heart, the game is an RPG. You have a lot of choices when it comes to what you do in the game. You can be talking to one person, giving them a real old sweet talk and then all of a sudden, they become your snack. There are plenty of dialogue options and I would bet that the way you portray your vampire will probably be different from the way I did mine.

Combat is truly awesome and no matter what perspective you are playing it from you are in for a great time. I love how there are so many weapons. You have melee and firearms and there is plenty of choices. Of course, you are a vampire so you can also get in there and do your dirty work without the aid of weapons.

I felt that the combat was very satisfying and as I had so much fun with it, I found myself leveling up quite quickly as I progressed. Sometimes you have what feels like are a whole horde of zombies after you, but the combat is so responsive and fluid, you will be tearing them apart in no time.

It is not just all fighting that you have to worry about in Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines. You do have other skills that you need to work on as well. Seduction is where you can talk to people and get your way. There is also hacking and lock picking that you can level up too. There really is a lot going on here and it is up to you what kind of skills you really want to focus on.

I think that Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines holds up fantastically well. The game is just an absolute blast to play. It is a solid action packed RPG that I have played through a couple of times and I have never once found myself getting bored. With the sequel on the way next year, I highly recommend you check this one out.
