eFootball PES 2021

eFootball PES 2021 literally has Season Update in the name so that gives you an idea of what to expect. Konami has been pretty upfront about this year’s game in that their main focus is on next year’s next-gen game. Still, Konami has done some rather interesting tweaks to this year’s game.

The Game Review

I have read many people say that the gameplay is completely unchanged, but this is simply not true. What we have here is a PES that is a tad tighter than it was in the previous years game. This for me was most evident when you would take control of a player just before they get the ball. Being able to skip around a defender was really cool and fun.

It goes without saying that if you loved what PES 2020 offered, you will enjoy this. On the flips side of that, the game has not improved some of the issues that remained. The most glaring one for me is when there is a loose ball and players on both sides just stand there until your highlighted player will go and get it. For a game that is all about realism, this can take you right out of it.

I enjoy the PES series and think the last couple of games, especially last year have been the most fun the series has been in years. This “Season Update” does more than enough things to make it a worthwhile edition if you enjoyed the previous PES game.

We all know that PES has struggled with licenses over the year and 2021 is the same thing. We have lost both Milan teams, but we have gained Roma. You can of course take advantage of the community by downloading options files that restore all of the teams, but it is an extra step that is always annoying if you ask me.

Due to the licensing issue, when you play Master League for me, you have to play as one of the licensed teams. I have had a blast running through Master League as Juventus as they are not licensed in FIFA, I took advantage of them being here. When Konami does have the license for a team they go all in and they are incredibly well done.

They have also increased the number of managers that you can play as in Master League mode. They have added in Frank Lampard which I thought was pretty cool. What is super weird is Pep Guardiola, it is awesome he is here in the game, but he looks about 20 years younger than he does now.

One license that they have which is cool is Euro 2020. Even though the tournament did not take place it is still here. They have all the teams, most of the likenesses, the TV-style presentation, and so on and it is a ton of fun to take your chosen nation to glory. It is crazy to think that a few years ago this would have been a standalone game!

It would be so easy to say that eFootball PES 2021 Season Update is a quick cash Grab. However, I feel Konami has been very honest here and the game is being sold at a massively discounted price. If you enjoy the PES series then there is more than enough meat on the bone to make this worth your time.
