In the world of football simulation video games, there are two major brand names that stand above the rest: Electronic Arts’ FIFA series and Konami’s Pro Evolution Soccer series of games. Developed by PES Productions and published in 2016 by the Japanese gaming giant better known for such titles like Metal Gear Solid and the Castlevania series Konami, the downloadable game of Pro Evolution Soccer 2017 (also known as Winning Eleven 2017 in some Asian markets) is the 16th installment in the long-running series.
It is one to feature a lot of in-game content that was produced in collaboration with sports clubs such as FC Barcelona, Liverpool F.C., Borussia Dortmund and Club Atlético River Plate. This customized content included player likenesses, stadiums, gear, and other simulation aspects.

The Game Review
In terms of gameplay, Pro Evolution Soccer 2017 is a step up from its predecessor and largely represents a refinement of that title’s core mechanics. One interesting feature of Pro Evolution Soccer 2017 system is its reliance upon an adaptive artificial intelligence that learns how each player’s style and adapts its tactics accordingly. This offers players a new depth of challenge to playing against a computer-based opponent and represents one of the best opportunities for a gamer to improve his game.
This feature largely emerged as a response from players who wanted gameplay options outside of multiplayer online gaming and the creation of a robust AI gives that group of players an outlet for that. One interesting feature of playing with friends, however, is something called “Match Analysis,” a detailed statistical review of your opponent’s Pro Evolution Soccer 2017 playstyle. Not only does this measure things such as the mechanics of the game and how well your opponent executes them but also gives players the opportunity to review stats and perhaps develop a pregame strategy for how to handle their opponent.
As Pro Evolution Soccer 2017 is a football simulation title, there are certain elements of the game that PES Productions has paid particular attention to in order to get the feeling just right. This includes the partnerships with many of the teams listed above as well as the addition of Mandarin Chinese commentary for the first time.
As is typical in sports games, Pro Evolution Soccer 2017 offers color commentary provided by Peter Drury and Jim Beglin in the English tracks using a system called “concatenation” which means stringing together. Basically, in practice this means that sound clips are combined to create a more natural and flowing commentary than ever possible before – and it shows. You’ll actually feel like you’re in the heat of a real football match and that’s part of the magic of Pro Evolution Soccer 2017.
Largely receiving a warm appraisal from critics the only real areas of content with Pro Evolution Soccer 2017 as a game stem from its graphics engine which some reviewers felt could be better with some even calling it a last-gen title in terms of aesthetic appearance. But, given Pro Evolution Soccer 2017’s focus on gameplay over flash, this isn’t that shocking and, secondly, understanding the title’s underdog status in the face of games like FIFA helps explain where the budget dollars have to spent.
