Putting the world of Conan in an RTS game sounded like a great idea so Conan Unconquered appealed to me. Featuring base building, exploration, looting, combat and more. Conan Unconquered is an RTS game that feels like it is really trying to appeal to all kinds of gamers.
How to Download Conan Unconquered
The game can be downloaded from Steam. If you like Conan, you should also have a look at the multiplayer survival game Conan Exiles, and the MMORPG Age of Conan.
The Game Review
Let me start by saying that as I write this Conan Unconquered has just been released and I expect some fixes to be happening real soon. However, despite the very “mixed” reception that this game is getting. I have found myself having fun with what they have done here despite a few flaws.
The basic goal of Conan Unconquered is to survive the wave after wave of enemies that are trying to get at you and destroy what you have. The enemy types are great and there is certainly a lot of variety to them. I, in particular, love the insect type enemies. As well as this you will need to build bases, utilize your units and even use the abilities of legendary heroes.
All the while you will have to explore the area to find treasure chests and clear out enemy nests. It feels like there is always something to do in Conan Unconquered and that you always have just enough time to do it. If you take too long doing one thing, then enemies could attack, leaving you vulnerable.
The game is very easy to get the basics of and as there are only a few units, abilities and so on for you to worry about I do think it is very assessable. On the flip side of this, I have heard some folks say that the game is too simple and lacking in features. I am not sure I would agree with this as I think that Conan Unconquered has more than enough to make each game fun.
There is a really tough challenge as the game progresses. From what I could figure out, during the end game if you manage to lose a certain kind of building in battle there is no way to recover from it. While I think that the game is certainly accessible, it will severely punish you for making a mistake so it does make you have to pay attention.
I found the combat to be pretty fun and exploring was something I did enjoy. I also found that I could just run to a chest, loot it and get the heck out of there without fighting anything in my way. To be honest this is not something I would recommend as the more you level up the better off you will be in the end game.
The game does have a story, but I really feel that they could have done more in this regard. You get pages from a comic book as you play and this is actually an all original story so that is pretty cool. I like the overall presentation, but the game seems to want to keep changing the settings all by itself which is very annoying.
One of the biggest features that Conan Unconquered has is the ability to let you play co-op with a friend. Conan Unconquered in co-op is such a great idea as you guys can work together and have one player focusing on one part of your clan and the other on something else. You really do have to work together in order to have the best chance of survival.
With this Deluxe Edition of Conan Unconquered, you do also get two extra units that you can use. There is a Conan eBook and a digital soundtrack thrown in as well. Of course, if this is worth that extra ten bucks is up to you.
I think that there are some great ideas in Conan Unconquered. I like the more methodical pace of the action, exploration is fun and I think there is more depth here than people are giving it credit for. The game is not perfect by any means and I am sure fixes/changes will be coming. Still, if you like fantasy-based RTS games, I do feel that this is worth taking a closer look at.
